Onsite

Onsite Program

Overview

The Montclair State University Gifted and Talented (G&T) Program's Onsite Program has been guiding children’s academic journeys since 1981. Hundreds of students enroll in dozens of unique, "beyond school" courses specifically designed by our instructors, or Subject Matter Experts (SME's).

Courses

Our unique, innovative courses provide access to Subject Matter Experts (SME's) who differentiate in the teachable moment for our highly curious minds. You may find students digging deep into Stephen Hawking's work in our Astrophysics course, across the hall from our Superhero Science students examining the shell of a live insect while exploring exoskeletons, next door to the Commodities students analyzing the "head and shoulders" pattern on a graph of the latest crude oil prices, the same time that the Structural Engineering students have been given a new limitation to overcome as a team during a timed building design challenge.

We offer new courses each session along with perennial favorites such as Things That Go! and Scratch Programming. Our courses span all subject areas with a focus on promoting career exploration and promoting key skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, data analysis, and the design process. The course curricula are challenging yet purposely flexible to allow our SME’s to adjust and differentiate as needed. Our SME’s are trained to employ best practices such as immersing students in real-world challenges and efficiently guiding student-led inquiry. The courses are themed and tracked to allow for students to pursue specific topics or further specific skills across multiple courses, such as our biomedicine themed courses: Pirate Doctors, Blood and Bones, Anatomy and Physiology, and CSI Forensics.

Eligibility

Students can prove eligibility by choosing from several methods, including standardized test scores showing the equivalent of a PARCC Level 5, an IQ test score of 130+, or two completed Gifted & Talented Recommendation Forms from non-family members. Detailed eligibility requirements and recommendaiton forms can be found here

Safety and Support Staff

Safety is our top priority for our Program students and staff. Every session day is staffed by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). Our EMT’s assist students with known medical issues and are always available for emergencies. Trained Program Assistants (PA's) collaborate with our SME's with implementing course activities, modeling effective communication and collaboration skills, counseling students who may have specific issues, assisting with in-class technology use, and encouraging career exploration. Our PA's also escort our younger students between classes.
