Why you should choose Montclair State University

Established in 1908, Montclair State University is a leading institution of higher education in New Jersey. Designated a Research Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the University’s nine colleges and schools serve more than 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students with more than 300 doctoral, master's and baccalaureate level programs.

Situated on a beautiful, 252-acre (102 hectares) suburban campus just 12 miles (19 kilometers) from New York City, Montclair State delivers the instructional and research resources of a large public university in a supportive, sophisticated and diverse academic environment. Take a virtual tour of campus.

Students receive the individual attention you’d expect from a much smaller institution.

  • Student-to-faculty ratio of 17 to 1
  • Average class size is 23 students
  • Courses taught by professors, not graduate assistants

Montclair State University is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education. This designation is reserved for colleges and universities with enrollments of full-time, Hispanic undergraduate students of at least 25 percent.

For 15 straight years, Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine has included Montclair State among its “Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics,” a ranking that identifies the colleges and universities that enroll, train and graduate the most Hispanic scholars.

Consistently named among New Jersey’s best cities, Montclair is rich in cultural, recreational and outdoor activities. Our students have access to 175 acres of parks and rivers and a funky, eclectic downtown, complete with a robust arts scene and great restaurants! All within a short bus or train ride from one of the world’s greatest cities.
