{"id":2292,"date":"2022-01-04T15:08:09","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T20:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/global\/?page_id=2292"},"modified":"2022-01-06T14:46:32","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T19:46:32","slug":"academic-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/global\/academic-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic training is the name the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program uses for off-campus employment or practical experience related to your field of study. It is fairly flexible and offers a variety of paid and unpaid, full-time (more than 20 hours per week) or part-time (up to 20 hours per week), training or employment situations, with one or more employers, to supplement your academic program in the U.S. Students must receive separate academic training authorization for every paid or unpaid employment opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic training is available at any stage of your academic program, either while you are enrolled in school or after you complete your academic program. As long as you maintain valid J-1 status, follow the appropriate application and approval procedures, and stay within the stated time limits, you qualify for academic training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are considering academic training, your authorization must be processed before your official academic program completion date. In addition, the academic training must begin within the first 30 days after the official academic program completion date.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Always study full-time<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>Enroll for and complete a full-time study course load (12 credits for undergraduate students, 9 credits for graduate students, 6 credits for students in the Artist\u2019s Diploma and Performer\u2019s Certificate programs) every fall and spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>Undergraduate students: You are required to enroll in at least 9 credits in person (face-to-face or hybrid) each semester.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Graduate students: You are required to enroll in at least 6 credits in person (face-to-face or hybrid) each semester.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><u>You must always have at least one in-person class\u00a0<\/u>(face-to-face or hybrid) in your final semester,\u00a0<em>even if it&#8217;s during the summer term!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Eligibility Criteria<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You are eligible for academic training if all of the following criteria are met:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You are in the U.S. primarily for study in a full-time academic program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You are in good academic standing at your educational institution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must apply before the completion of your academic program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You are participating in academic training that is directly related to your major field of study.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your employment\/training must take place with the specific employer or employers who are noted on the academic training authorization letter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must receive an authorization letter, in advance, for the duration and type of academic training, from the Office of Global Engagement office. This authorization must be processed before the end date on the Form DS-2019 or before the official date of the degree program completion, whichever comes first.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have a valid Form DS-2019 that enables you to remain in the U.S. in J-1 student status. You must apply for extensions as needed and in a timely manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must maintain health insurance coverage for yourself and any dependents. Your coverage must meet the minimum requirements set by the Department of State.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Length of Academic Training<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who complete a degree program are permitted an overall academic training period of 18 months. This includes all academic training, whether before or after completion of studies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The total employment period may not exceed the amount of time spent in the full course of study. For example, if you are a master\u2019s student who completed a program in 12 months, you are only eligible for 12 months of academic training. Doctoral students may be granted a total of 36 months of academic training in periods of 18 months or less.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Completing more than one degree program at the same time does not increase your academic training period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any pre-completion academic training period is deducted from your total allowable academic training period when calculating post-completion academic training.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A period spent in part-time employment under academic training will count as full-time academic training and will be deducted from the 18 or 36 months of post-completion academic training.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Types of Academic Training<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students can apply for academic training before or after they complete his studies:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pre-completion academic training\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students apply for pre-completion academic training before they finish their academic program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It can be paid or unpaid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students must maintain full-time enrollment during the spring and fall semesters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Part-time academic training is counted as full-time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any amount of time of pre-completion academic training will be deducted from the overall allotment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Post-completion academic training\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employment after your program completion must be for wages or another type of remuneration. If the proposed employment is unpaid, you must show that you are supported by other sources, like your home government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employment must start within 30 days of your program completion date.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">How to Apply for Academic Training<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To apply for academic training you must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have a formal employment offer, written on official stationery (letterhead) from your potential academic training employer. The job offer letter from your employer must include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your job title<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A brief description of the goals and objectives of your training or employment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dates and location of training or employment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Number of hours per week, salary, and benefits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Name and title of your training supervisor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Obtain a letter of recommendation from your academic advisor or dean recommending this academic training. You will need to provide him\/her with a copy of your employment offer letter. The recommendation letter from your academic advisor or dean must include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The goals and objectives of the specific training program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A description of the training program, including all the information listed above<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An explanation of how the training relates to your major field of study<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An explanation of why this employment is an integral or critical part of your academic program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The length of time necessary to complete the goals and objectives of the academic training<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Submit a request for Student Academic Training through <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/montclair-isss.terradotta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MyGlobal Portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/global\/appointments\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schedule an appointment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the Office of Global Engagement. <\/span><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your appointment <\/span><strong>must occur at least 20 working days before<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> your official degree completion date or before the end date on your Form DS-2019, whichever is earlier. If you fail to submit your application before your program completion, or before the end date on your Form DS-2019, whichever is earlier, <\/span><strong>you will not be eligible<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for academic training.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bring the following documents with you to your appointment:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employment offer letter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Letter of recommendation from your academic advisor or dean<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Copies of your current and all previous Forms DS-2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A copy of your passport biographical data page and visa page<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A copy of paper or print-out of electronic <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Form I-94<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unofficial transcript from Nest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proof of funding to show how you will support yourself during your academic training (if your academic training is unpaid)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your application is approved, we will issue a new Form DS-2019 authorizing the academic training for the duration you requested. Your employer will be listed on the academic training authorization letter accompanying the new Form DS-2019. The end date on this form is now the end date of your J-1 program. Please note that you can\u2019t start work before your academic training is approved.\u00a0 Most likely your employer will also request that you have a Social Security Number. To be eligible to <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/global\/life-in-the-united-states\/social-security-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">apply for a Social Security number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> you will need your DS-2019 updated to include Academic Training.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Academic training is the name the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program uses for off-campus employment or practical experience related to your field of study.
