Designed to be completed on-campus over two years, the Alternate Route accommodates student schedules as they teach in a full-time teaching position simultaneously while completing required coursework. In this coursework, students gain the necessary knowledge and skills related to their work as teachers, including: content and pedagogy, understanding of learning and development, instructional planning, implementing instruction, earning communities, and leadership and collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please note: the Alternate Route program is specifically designed for individuals who already hold a CE and a full-time teaching position. Students without a CE should look into our <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate\/programs-of-study\/teacher-education-and-certification\/\">Master of Art in Teaching or Post-Baccalaureate<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate\/programs-of-study\/teacher-education-and-certification\/\">Teacher Education and Certification Programs page<\/a> to view all of our offerings from the department.<\/p>\n<p>Please refer to our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate\/programs-of-study\/\">programs of study<\/a>\u00a0page for a comprehensive list of all of the graduate programs\u00a0offered within the university.<\/p>\n<p><em>*F1\/J1 visa seeking students are not eligible for this program.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Admission Requirements<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Office of Graduate Admissions requires the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor\u2019s degree in order to be eligible to apply for a graduate program. Applicants with non-U.S. degrees, please visit the<\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate\/how-to-apply\/international-applicants\/\"> international applicants<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> page to review the U.S. degree equivalency information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, applicants must have a CE in the area they are seeking certification in and must hold a full-time teaching position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please note there is a 3.0 GPA requirement for consideration for the alternate route program. GPA flexibility rules can apply to individuals with a 2.75-2.99. Applicants with a Limited CE (who waive the GPA minimum) must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for Montclair State University.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Application Checklist<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>In order to make applying for graduate school as seamless as possible for you, we have<br \/>\ncreated an application checklist. This checklist can be a reference point for you during the<br \/>\napplication process to ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of the steps<br \/>\nneeded to apply, as well as all corresponding supplemental materials for your specific<br \/>\nprogram of interest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application Deadline: Rolling Admission <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Fall\/Spring)<br \/>\nApplication must be completed two weeks before the first day of the semester. You can learn more about the first day of classes by visiting our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/academics\/academic-calendar\/\">Academic Calendar<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Submit Online Application: Please create your online account and submit your application by following the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/graduate\/how-to-apply\/\">general application instructions<\/a> and pay (or waive) the non-refundable $60 application fee. Once this step has been completed, the online portal will allow you to upload your supplemental materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The following is a list of the supplemental materials that will accompany your application for the Alternate Route Teacher Certification (K-6 Elementary) program:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Transcript: One from each college attended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Portrait of a Teacher Essay &#8211; Pick one of the following standards:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Standard 1: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understand critical thinking and problem solving and create learning experiences that promote the development of students\u2019 critical thinking and problem solving skills and dispositions<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Standard 2: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understand principles of democracy and plan and carry out instruction that promotes democratic values and communication in the classroom<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After you have picked one of the standards, in a cohesive essay of two pages, please address the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In your life as a citizen, student, and future teacher of this society, what experiences are reflective of this standard? Additionally, what experiences in your life have conflicted with this standard?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Envision yourself as a teacher. How would you foster a classroom climate that would promote this standard in your discipline? You might begin by reflecting on some of your own classroom experiences as a student. Which things would you do differently and which would you emulate in creating such a classroom climate?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standardized Test Scores: <\/strong>See information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/cssee\/\">Center for Student Success and Educator Excellence<\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Praxis II scores in content area are required.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Certificate of Eligibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Resume: Required<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">50 hour Pre-Professional Experience:\u00a0 May be satisfied by taking: ECEL 501 Perspectives on Early Childhood and Elementary Education in a Diverse Society (3 credits) OR an hours-based course at another institution with 20 hours field experience in a 50-hour class.
