{"id":24878,"date":"2025-03-27T13:15:41","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T17:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/information-technology\/?page_id=24878"},"modified":"2025-03-27T13:15:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T17:15:41","slug":"software-center-windows","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/information-technology\/software-center-windows\/","title":{"rendered":"Software Center (Windows)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Windows Self-Service Through the Software Center<\/h2>\n<p>On your University managed Windows machine, you log into <strong>Software Center<\/strong> to install applications and software updates.<\/p>\n<h3>Opening Software Center<\/h3>\n<h4>Method 1<\/h4>\n<p>For the simplest method to start Software Center on a Windows 10 or 11 computer<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Press <strong>Start<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Type <strong>Software Center<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Press on the <strong>Enter key<\/strong> on your keyboard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Method 2<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navigate to the Start menu.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look under the Microsoft System Center group for the Software Center icon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Applications<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image3.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image3.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"software center\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select the Applications tab to find and install applications that are available for your computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>All<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Shows all applications that you can install.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Required<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Your IT admin enforces these applications. If you uninstall one of these applications, Software Center will reinstall it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Filters<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Your IT admin may create categories of applications. If available, click the drop-down list to filter the view to only those applications in a specific category. Select <\/span><strong>All<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to show all applications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sort by<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Rearrange the list of applications. By default this list sorts by <\/span><strong>Most recent<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Search<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Still can&#8217;t find what you&#8217;re looking for? Enter keywords in the Search box to find it!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Switch the view:<\/strong> Select the icons to switch the view between list view and tile view. By default, the applications list shows as graphic tiles.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Tile view:<\/strong> Your IT admin can customize the icons. Below each tile displays the application name, publisher, and version.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>List view:<\/strong> This view displays the application icon, name, publisher, version, and status.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Installing Multiple Applications<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Install more than one application at a time instead of waiting for one to finish before starting the next. Not all applications qualify:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The app must be visible to you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The app must not be already downloaded or installed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your IT admin doesn&#8217;t require approval to install the app.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To install more than one application at a time:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To enter into the multi-select mode in the list view, click the multi-select icon <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the upper right corner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select two or more apps to install by clicking the checkbox to the left of the apps in the list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select the <\/span><strong>Install Selected<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The apps install as normal, only now in succession.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Installation Status<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image1.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image1.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"software center installation status window\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Click the <\/span><strong>Installation status<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tab to view the status of applications. You may see the following states:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Installed<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Software Center already installed this application on this computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Downloading<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Software Center is downloading the software to install on this computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Failed<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Software Center encountered an error in trying to install the software. Please contact the <a href=\"mailto:itservicedesk@montclair.edu\">IT service desk<\/a> if multiple failures occur.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Options<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image2.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/168\/2024\/08\/image2.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"software center options window\"\/><\/figure>\n<h4>Work information<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indicate the hours that you typically work. Your IT admin may schedule software installations outside your business hours. Allow at least four hours each day for system maintenance tasks. Your IT admin can still install critical applications and software updates during business hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Click the drop-down lists to select the earliest and latest hours that you use this computer. By default these values are from <\/span><strong>5 a.m. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">through <\/span><strong>10 p.m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select the checkbox next to the days of the week that you typically use this computer. Software Center only selects the weekdays by default.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Power Management<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your IT admin may set power management policies. These policies help your organization conserve electricity when this computer isn&#8217;t in use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To make this computer exempt from these policies, select the checkbox <\/span><strong>Do not apply power settings from my IT department to this computer<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>.<\/strong> This setting is disabled by default; the computer applies power settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Computer Maintenance<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specify how Software Center applies changes to software before the deadline<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Automatically install or uninstall required software and restart the computer only outside of the specified business hours<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> This setting is disabled by default.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Suspend Software Center activities when my computer is in presentation mode<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> This setting is enabled by default.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sync Policy<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>:<\/strong> Select this button when instructed by your IT admin.
