See media coverage for this event<\/a> Join media representatives and scholars B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Deschamps, Maurita Cardone, Lucia Grillo and\u00a0Alberto Vourvoulias-Bush for a round table discussion that focuses on the historical and contemporary role of the Italian media in the U.S., in Italian language or otherwise, in reporting about Italian news, culture, economy, etc.<\/p>\n The presentations will provide an overview of the history of Italian newspapers between the late 1800s and the early 1900s, and a perspective on how the press has changed over the decades\u00a0in response to issues of international affairs and technology. The round table will explore the ways in which the Italian communities abroad have helped shape an image of Italy, its society and politics, in the U.S. through the use of media, while reflecting the stories of Italians in America back “home.”<\/p>\n Program:<\/strong><\/p>\n PRESENTERS’ BIOS<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/a>B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Deschamps<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is Associate Professor in American Studies at the University of Paris Diderot (Universit\u00e9 Paris Sorbonne Cit\u00e9) in France, where she teaches U.S. History. She has published numerous articles on Italian-American history, and has co-edited several books among which:\u00a0Les Petites Italies dans le monde<\/em>, Rennes, Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2007 and\u00a0Racial, Ethnic, and Homophobic Violence: Killing in the Name of Otherness<\/em>, London, Routledge Cavendish, 2007. Her book on the History of the Italian American press from the Risorgimento to WWI will be released in the spring of 2016.<\/p>\n <\/a>Maurita Cardone<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is an Italian journalist with over ten years of experience in the field. Her articles and videos have been featured by a number of Italian media outlets. She has been a regular contributor to\u00a0Il Sole 24 ore<\/em>\u00a0(the Italian\u00a0Financial Times<\/em>) for the past five years, and has reported from New York for the last three. Since April 2013, she has been the Deputy Editor of the online magazine\u00a0La Voce di New York<\/em><\/a>, a Manhattan-based\u00a0online daily magazine that chiefly focuses on the local Italian community and its culture. Prior to that, she was an editor for the environmentalist magazine\u00a0La nuova ecologia<\/em>\u00a0in Rome. While working for the magazine, she developed a two-year video-journalism program, which involved high school students filming interviews for a final newscast project.<\/p>\n <\/a>Lucia Grillo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is an award-winning filmmaker, with her company\u00a0Calabrisella Films<\/em><\/a>\u00a0producing narrative short films, documentary features, and music videos. Lucia is producer and correspondent of\u00a0Italics<\/a><\/em>, which airs monthly on CUNY-TV. As an actress, her screen credits include films directed by Spike Lee and Tony Gilroy, among others. Theatre credits include Cherry Lane and Signature theatres. She has taught acting at the university level and various courses\/seminars on acting and on Italian cinema, in the U.S and Italy. She received her BFA in Acting from New York University\u2019s Tisch School of the Arts and trained at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.<\/p>\n <\/a>Alberto Vourvoulias-Bush<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is a freelance columnist. He has been Visiting Scholar on Online Journalism at the American Academy in Rome, helped found and launch foxnewslatino.com, served as Corporate Executive Editor of impreMedia, the largest Spanish-language news publisher in the United States, and as Executive Editor of El Diario\/La Prensa, the oldest Spanish-language newspaper in the country. Prior to that, he was Deputy Editor of TIME Magazine\u2019s Latin America edition.
