The course was largely based on her 2017 book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/endowed-chair-research\/book\"><em>Pre-Occupied Spaces: Remapping Italy&#8217;s Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies<\/em><\/a> and enriched by her current project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/endowed-chair-research\/memoria-presente-the-common-spanish-legacy-in-italian-and-latin-american-cultures-neh-project\">\u201c<em>Memoria presente<\/em>: The Common Spanish Legacy in Italian and Latin American Cultures.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-216579\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/2022\/06\/01\/dr-teresa-fiore-visiting-professor-at-yale-university-spring-2022\/italian-dept-building-yale\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2022\/06\/Italian-Dept.-building-Yale.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2022\/06\/Italian-Dept.-building-Yale.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Italian Dept. building Yale\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"s3\">Conducted in English <span class=\"s7\">and<\/span> Italian, the course looked at Italian culture <\/span><span class=\"s3\">within a transnational context that privileged contacts and exchanges across <\/span><span class=\"s3\">places<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> times<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, and languages<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">M<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ultiple forms of mobility were explored to challenge the <\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">national<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s3\">paradigm from <\/span><span class=\"s3\">the modern to the contemporary period<\/span><span class=\"s3\">: <\/span><span class=\"s3\">early imperialism under Spanish rule; <\/span><span class=\"s3\">colonial routes in Africa and the Mediterranean; emigration flows to practically all continents; and contemporary immigration <\/span><span class=\"s3\">often carrying the legacy of colonialism or imperialism<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Materials include<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> films, documentaries, short stories, novels, songs, and photographs by such diverse artists and authors as <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Nanni<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> Moretti, Dawit L. Petros, Jhumpa <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Lahiri<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, Gabriel <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, Laura <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Pariani<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Igiaba <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Scego<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, Italo Calvino, Leonardo <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Sciascia<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Maaza<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">Mengiste<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Dagmawi<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">Yimer<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, Amir <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Issaa<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">and others. \u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><em>Above: The Italian Studies Department building<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\nIn c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">reating complex circuits of reverberations in which Italy is a point of departure, arrival<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">transit<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> or return<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, t<\/span><span class=\"s3\">he course aimed at preparing<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">cross-disciplinary scholars<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> engaged with the recent \u201ctransnational turn\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s3\">and <\/span><span class=\"s3\">focus<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> on linguistic and cultural translation<\/span><span class=\"s3\">.<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> It also equipped the<\/span><span class=\"s3\">m<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> to become advocates for a more inclusive, diverse, and expanded vision of Italian Studies<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> in response to <\/span><span class=\"s3\">a fast-changing<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> job market <\/span><span class=\"s3\">that<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> re-design<\/span><span class=\"s3\">s<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> departments and curricula.<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The final projects were all designed to be accessible by an external audience, or as platforms for future endeavors.
