Caption text is powered by machine learning. It depends on audio input from the speaker, including the speaker&#8217;s accent, voice modulation, and intonation. As a result, captions might not be a complete and accurate transcription of the speaker&#8217;s words.<\/p>\n<h3>Panopto Captions<\/h3>\n<div class=\"prpl-band-small lt-gray no-margin\"><div class=\"text-content\"><div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/information-technology\/panopto\/\">Panopto <\/a>is an all-in-one video platform. It not only provides desktop lecture recording and automatic captioning services, It is also seamlessly integrated with Canvas. Panopto allows users to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/ASR-Generated-Captions\">add ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) Captions<\/a> into videos they have Creator access to. To edit the captioning of these videos, or any video that you may have already directly embedded into a page, follow the steps below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Locate the video within your course.<\/li>\n<li>Once there, click on the <strong>\u2197<\/strong>, highlighted below, to open the video within Panopto.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/06\/ZoomWatchinPanoptoButton.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/06\/ZoomWatchinPanoptoButton.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot highlighting the arrow button required to launch a video within the Panopto Viewer.\"\/><\/figure>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Within the Panopto Viewer, follow the instructions below on how to create and edit captions on a video.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">How to Create and Edit Panopto Captions<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>Automatic captions can be added to a video after it is recorded and published.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To create automatic captions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For a video recorded within your course, head over to the Panopto Video Library and select <strong>My Folder<\/strong>. <em>(For videos already embedded within a page or hosted by ITDS, please see the instructions above.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Hover over the video and click <strong>Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Captions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure <strong>Automatic Machine Captions<\/strong> is selected.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong><\/strong><strong>Order<\/strong>.\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/02\/Panopto-Caption-1.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/02\/Panopto-Caption-1.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot pointing out the different steps to enable captions on Panopto\"\/><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>A window will open with information regarding the order details.<\/li>\n<li>Close the window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once this process has finished, the captions will be accessible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To View or Edit the Captions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Hover over the Video in the Panopto Library and select <strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Captions<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Captions that are auto generated need to be edited and reviewed carefully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To edit a captions text or start time:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"577\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/06\/edit-captions.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Animated gif depicting the process of editing a caption live within Panopto.\" \/><\/figure>\n<ol>\n<li>Play the video in the timeline.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the caption you would like to edit.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>More<\/strong> icon to the left of the time stamp.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Edit<\/strong> the caption as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the process until all captions are corrected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>To delete a caption:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the <strong>More<\/strong> icon to the left of the time stamp.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>To add a caption:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on the timeline where you would like the caption to begin.<\/li>\n<li>Click where is says <strong>Enter a Caption<\/strong> (beneath your current captions).<\/li>\n<li>Type the text for the caption.<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publish<\/strong> the video.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For information on manually uploading a caption file, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/Manually-upload-Captions\">Panopto Support Website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Google Slides Captions<\/h3>\n<div class=\"prpl-band-small lt-gray no-margin\"><div class=\"text-content\"><div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Google Slides allows users to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/docs\/answer\/9109474?hl=en\">present slides with captions<\/a>. When you present slides, you can turn on automatic captions to display the speaker&#8217;s words in real-time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/06\/gslideslogo.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2022\/06\/gslideslogo.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Google Slides Icon\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">How to Use Google Slides Captions<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><strong>Google Slides &#8211; Present with Captions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When using the Chrome browser, Google Slides allows presenters to turn on automatic captions to display a speaker\u2019s words in real-time. Using your device\u2019s microphone or an external microphone, you can use automatic closed captions that will populate and allow you to adjust the sizing and position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Set up your microphone<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To use captions with Google Slides, your computer microphone needs to be on.<\/li>\n<li>Google Slides uses the computer\u2019s microphone or an external microphone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Step 2: Present with captions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect to the Internet.<\/li>\n<li>Open your presentation in Google Slides. If you don\u2019t have content slides, consider using a blank Google Slide to generate your audio input to transcriptions<\/li>\n<li>To start presenting, click <strong>Present<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/google-slides-presenting.jpg\" alt=\"screenshot of Google Slides detail showing present button\" width=\"512\" height=\"84\" \/><\/li>\n<li>At the bottom left of the Present screen, click <strong>More options<\/strong> &#8211;<br \/>\n<strong>Captions preferences<\/strong> and then <strong>Toggle captions<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/itds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/248\/2021\/10\/audiability2a1.jpg.png\" alt=\"screenshot of Google Slides presentation detail showing live caption settings\" width=\"767\" height=\"371\" \/><\/li>\n<li>To change the location of the captions, click Text position. it is suggested you choose Top.<\/li>\n<li>To change the size of the caption text, click Text Size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you speak, captions appear at the bottom or top of the screen.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To turn off captions, click More options at the bottom left of the Present screen, Captions preferences and then Toggle captions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notes on captions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Captions are not stored<\/li>\n<li>Captions don&#8217;t include punctuation.<\/li>\n<li>Captions and your microphone automatically turn off if there&#8217;s no activity on your computer for 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Zoom Live Captions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"prpl-band-small lt-gray no-margin\"><div class=\"text-content\"><div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.instructure.com\/courses\/3\/pages\/overview-conferences?module_item_id=2243943\">Zoom <\/a>is the official video\/web conferencing tool across campus and is integrated into all Canvas courses. You can enable live transcription in your Zoom meetings. To enable the closed captioning, click <strong>Host caption control settings<\/strong> then enable the <strong>Allow closed captioning for this meeting<\/strong> option.
