Choose well-prepared audition repertoire that demonstrates how well you play and where your musical interests lie. You\u2019re also welcome to share musical materials \u201coutside the box\u201d of a traditional audition &#8211; something that shows how you see yourself as a complete musician. This should be in addition to the requirements listed below for your primary instrument.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nMA Music Therapy, MA Music Education, &amp; MAT applicants <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">do not<\/span><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>need to complete a formal audition. Bach or one of his contemporaries (ie. Prelude &amp; Fugue)<\/li>\n<li>Two pieces by Romantic or Contemporary composers, one of which being lyrical and the other virtuosic.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, the applicant should prepare a hymn as if one were playing for an assembly. Students are required to audition on a minimum of 3 out of the 5 instruments offered within the program. Students may opt to include a 4th instrument on their audition if they choose.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Including a double reed in your audition is not required, but it is strongly encouraged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The audition will be a total of 15-20 minutes with the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary Instrument (5 minutes): All scales &#8211; major, harmonic minor and chromatic (at faculty discretion). One etude &amp; one movement of any major sonata or concerto.<\/li>\n<li>Secondary Instrument (5 minutes): All major &amp; chromatic scales (at faculty discretion). One etude &amp; one movement of any major sonata or concerto.<\/li>\n<li>Third Instrument (3 minutes): One etude &#8211; OR &#8211; a movement of any major sonata or concerto.<\/li>\n<li>Fourth Instrument (3 minutes): One etude &#8211; OR &#8211; a movement of any major sonata or concerto.<\/li>\n<li>Possible sight-reading on all instruments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Voice<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<h3>Theory\/Composition<\/h3>\n<p>Three (3) pieces chosen from the solo voice literature including<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One art song in English<\/li>\n<li>One art song in a foreign language<\/li>\n<li>One additional song or aria of the candidate\u2019s choice from any genre or style of music that shows the candidate&#8217;s strengths<\/li>\n<li>Possible sight-reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All audition pieces must be memorized. An accompanist will be provided for you. Please bring copies of your sheet music.<\/p>\n<h3>Performance &amp; Vocal Performance + Pedagogy<\/h3>\n<p>Four (4) pieces chosen from the solo voice literature including<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One Italian aria or art song<\/li>\n<li>One German or French art song<\/li>\n<li>One 20th or 21st century aria or art song in English<\/li>\n<li>One additional selection of the candidate&#8217;s choice. May be in any language, style, or genre that shows the candidate&#8217;s strengths<\/li>\n<li>Possible sight-reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All audition pieces must be memorized. An accompanist will be provided for you. Please bring copies of your sheet music.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Artist&#8217;s Diploma<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Five (5) pieces\u00a0chosen from the solo voice literature including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least four pieces must be from the standard operatic, art song, and\/or oratorio repertoire.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates must perform at least one selection each in Italian, French, German, and English.<\/li>\n<li>A variety of styles, periods, and tempos should be presented.<\/li>\n<li>At least two pieces must be operatic arias.<\/li>\n<li>A fifth selection may be of the candidate\u2019s choice in any language, style or musical tradition (i.e. spiritual, American Song Book, contemporary classical, operetta, Zarzuela, musical theater, native language art song or aria, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An accompanist will be provided for you. Please bring copies of your sheet music.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Jazz Studies<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<div><strong>Applicants who choose to submit audition videos<\/strong>\u00a0may record with a backing track, live musicians, or without accompaniment.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Applicants who choose to audition live\u00a0<\/strong>will be provided with musicians from the Cali School. Please bring three (3) copies of sheet music to your audition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jazz Voice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Repertoire \u2013 Scat singing (vocal improvisation) is encouraged but not required. All melodies should be sung with your own interpretation, but using the correct pitches.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One (1) song from the Great American Songbook (Rodgers &amp; Hart, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, etc.) Sung in a swing feel, at a medium or medium-up tempo. Please sing three choruses with improvisation or an embellished melody on the second chorus.<\/li>\n<li>One (1) jazz ballad<\/li>\n<li>One (1) of the following:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li>A blues song in a jazz\/swing feel, performed at medium tempo. Please include 2-3 choruses of improvisation or embellished melody.<\/li>\n<li>A song with a straight-eighth feel \u2013 Latin, Samba, or Bossa Nova. Please improvise or sing an embellished version of the melody on the second chorus.<\/li>\n<li>A song that exhibits your unique musical personality (such as a contrasting genre or an original composition)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jazz Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One (1) jazz standard or blues, played at a medium tempo &#8211; If selecting jazz standard: 1 chorus of melody, 2 choruses of improvisation.
