{"id":212113,"date":"2022-04-29T12:44:04","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T16:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/?p=212113"},"modified":"2022-11-10T15:58:42","modified_gmt":"2022-11-10T20:58:42","slug":"cali-professor-wins-a-grammy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/2022\/04\/29\/cali-professor-wins-a-grammy\/","title":{"rendered":"Cali Professor Wins Grammy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cali School of Music has a GRAMMY Winner in the house!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aubrey Johnson<\/strong>,\u00a0Jazz Voice Adjunct Professor and director of the Montclair State University Vocamotion Singers, performed on &#8220;Eberhard&#8221;, a 13-minute \u201cmini-symphony\u201d and homage to one of\u00a0Jazz keyboardist <strong>Lyle Mays<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0favorite composers and mentors, German jazz bassist <strong>Eberhard Weber.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2022\/04\/Lyle-Mays-Photo-by-Beth-Herzhaft-scaled-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2022\/04\/Lyle-Mays-Photo-by-Beth-Herzhaft-scaled-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Johnson says, &#8220;Lyle Mays was my uncle and mentor. I sang on the world premiere performance of the piece that won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition, &#8220;Eberhard&#8221;, back in 2009. Lyle retired from music in 2011, and it wasn&#8217;t until he became ill in 2019 that he decided that it was of the utmost importance to record &#8220;Eberhard&#8221; were he not to survive. I sang on the recording that year, in 2019, along with 16 other musicians including notable jazz players <strong>Bill Frisell, Bob Sheppard<\/strong>, and <strong>Alex Acu\u00f1a<\/strong>. The final mixing sessions were completed with Lyle before he passed away in February of 2020. Following Lyle&#8217;s passing, it was put to me to figure out how to release &#8220;Eberhard&#8221;\u2013a 13-minute, long-form composition\u2013into the world. I decided to independently release it as a single track CD, vinyl, digital download, and streaming album, and it came out in August of 2021.
