The event, held on May 10 in Chapin Hall&#8217;s Leshowitz Recital Hall, served as a remarkable showcase of the extraordinary talents and achievements of the school&#8217;s gifted musicians.<\/p>\n<p>The stage was set for a night of exceptional performances and well-deserved recognition at the prestigious awards ceremony. <strong>Derrick Campos<\/strong>, a remarkable undergraduate performer, claimed the Outstanding Undergraduate Performance Award. The audience eagerly anticipated his rendition of Jo\u00e3o Pernambuco&#8217;s &#8220;Sons de Carrilh\u00f5es&#8221; and the premiere of his original composition, &#8220;Caminhando Con Ton.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the event unfolded, <strong>Dean Daniel Gurskis<\/strong> took the stage to present the College of the Arts&#8217; Advisory Board Scholarship to\u00a0<strong>Colin Merkovsky<\/strong>, the Cento Amici Scholarship to\u00a0<strong>Adrianna Seewell, Thalia Suleymanov, and\u00a0Colin Merkovsky<\/strong>, and the Dean&#8217;s Award to\u00a0<strong>Harrison Smith<\/strong>. The ceremony also included a special acknowledgment of graduating students, Artist Diplomas, and Performance Certificates, marking their accomplishments in their musical journeys.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2023\/05\/Resized_20230510_182325-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2023\/05\/Resized_20230510_182325-1.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/john-j-cali-school-of-music\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2023\/05\/Resized_20230510_182325-1.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Daniel Gurskis took the stage to present the Dean&#8217;s Award to\u00a0Harrison Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The atmosphere brimmed with excitement as <strong>Asheln Udell<\/strong>, recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award, was welcomed to the stage. <strong>Dr. Bryan Powell<\/strong>, delivering an inspiring charge to the graduating class, set the tone for an evening celebrating excellence and achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the night, esteemed faculty members and guests continued to take the spotlight. <strong>Director Anthony Mazzocchi<\/strong> presented the Lucile and Enrico Oliva Endowed Music Scholarship to <strong>Christopher Vehmas<\/strong>, the Presser Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship for Outstanding Student to <strong>Rashaun Ashley<\/strong>, and the Thomas J. Randazzo Music Scholarship to <strong>Colin Merkovsky<\/strong>. <strong>Adrianna Viera<\/strong> received recognition for her Excellence in Academic Achievement, while <strong>Dr. Brian Abrams<\/strong> presented the David Ott Scholarship for Outstanding Music Therapy Intern to\u00a0<strong>Michael Kammers\u00a0<\/strong>and the David Ott Fellowships for Outstanding Graduate to <strong>Mark Quizon<\/strong>\u00a0and Undergraduate Music Therapy Student to\u00a0<strong>Alondra Batista<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof. Scott Richards<\/strong> announced the recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Composer Award as\u00a0<strong>Adrianna Viera<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Dr. Aaron Helgeson<\/strong> recognizing the Outstanding Graduate Composer Award as\u00a0<strong>Kalden Alexander\u00a0<\/strong>and Outstanding Undergraduate Composer Award as\u00a0<strong>Adrianna Viera.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Dr. Heather Buchanan<\/strong> took the stage to present the Excellence in Choir awards, both for undergraduates <strong>Emma Gunther, Maya Henry, Nicholas Scafuto, <\/strong>and<strong> Harrison Smith,\u00a0<\/strong>and graduate student <strong>Taylor Amato<\/strong>, along with the Cali School Service Award awarded to <strong>Amanda Roth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Marissa Silverman<\/strong> commended the Outstanding Student Teachers <strong>Nicholas Lipari-Pazienza <\/strong>and<strong> Jason Rosenblum<\/strong>, as well as the Outstanding Graduate Student in Music Education recipients\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Jacobson <\/strong>and<strong> Kyle Cottrell<\/strong>. <strong>Dr. Bryan Powell<\/strong> returned to honor the Excellence in Popular Music Ensemble recipients\u00a0<strong>Melissa Hughes<\/strong> and <strong>Jack Powers<\/strong>, while<strong> Dr. David Witten<\/strong> presented the Music Teachers National Association Award to <strong>Steven Viola<\/strong>. <strong>Prof. Kyle Ritenauer<\/strong> celebrated the Excellence in Orchestra Award given to <strong>Randy L\u00e9on<\/strong>, and <strong>Dr. Thomas McCauley<\/strong> recognized Excellence in Band undergraduate <strong>Emily Sullivan\u00a0<\/strong>and graduate <strong>Olivia Dorschel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof. Karen Driscoll<\/strong> awarded the recipients of the Undergraduate Excellence in Opera to\u00a0<strong>Chisom Maduakor<\/strong>\u00a0and Graduate Excellence in Opera Award to <strong>Seungchcan Hong<\/strong>, while <strong>Prof. Oscar Perez<\/strong> acknowledged the Excellence in Jazz Award was awarded to\u00a0<strong>Faith Krausman<\/strong>. <strong>Prof. Kathryn Lockwood<\/strong> took the stage to present the Oscar Ravina Talent Award to violinist\u00a0<strong>Noah Stevens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The audience was treated to a captivating performance by cellist <strong>Randy Leon<\/strong>, showcasing his talent with the third movement of Claude Bolling&#8217;s Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio. The exceptional trio consisted of <strong>Shixuan Zhang<\/strong> on piano, <strong>Ryan Chamberlain<\/strong> on bass, <strong>and Benjamin Barham-weise<\/strong> on drums.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director Anthony Mazzocchi<\/strong> concluded the ceremony with heartfelt closing remarks, expressing gratitude for the extraordinary talent and dedication displayed throughout the evening.
