Cali School of Music: <strong>Camryn Dewar<\/strong>, an Indigenous (M\u00e9tis) soprano from Stony Mountain, Manitoba (Treaty One territory), who has been named one of only 14 recipients of the prestigious <strong>2024\u20132025 Fulbright Canada Student Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A trailblazer in every sense, Camryn will complete her <strong>Master of Music in Opera Performance<\/strong> under the guidance of Metropolitan Opera\u2019s Barbara Dever next May. Her outstanding artistry and commitment to cultural advocacy have already gained international attention, and this Fulbright Award marks yet another milestone in her rapidly ascending career.<\/p>\n<h3>From Rural Roots to Global Stages<\/h3>\n<p>Camryn\u2019s musical journey began in rural Manitoba, where she developed her passion for opera and the performing arts. She earned her Bachelor of Music (Vocal Performance with Distinction) at the University of Manitoba before joining us at Montclair State University\u2019s John J. Cali School of Music. Despite the shift from small-town life to some of the world\u2019s most renowned concert halls\u2014like her recent performance in <em>The Grapes of Wrath<\/em> at Carnegie Hall\u2014Camryn remains deeply connected to her heritage as a proud Red River M\u00e9tis.<\/p>\n<h3>Fostering Truth and Reconciliation Through Music<\/h3>\n<p>As part of her Fulbright project, Camryn will present a <strong>Lecture Recital Series<\/strong> titled <strong>\u201cHarmonizing Truth and Reconciliation: Female Indigenous Representation and Community Engagement in Music.\u201d<\/strong> Through these lecture-recitals, she aims to bridge cultures and spark critical conversations about reconciliation. Mark your calendars for these upcoming presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>April 13<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Montclair Art Museum<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Late April<\/em> \u2013 <em>Montclair State University<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>May 12<\/strong> \u2013 <em>American Association of University Women<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Celebrating a Multitalented Performer<\/h3>\n<p>Camryn\u2019s performance r\u00e9sum\u00e9 already showcases her remarkable versatility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Indians on Vacation<\/strong> (workshop) at Banff Centre<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Grapes of Wrath<\/strong> at Carnegie Hall<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blind Injustice<\/strong> in New Jersey (with a future Lincoln Center engagement alongside MasterVoices)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Li Keur: Riel\u2019s Heart of the North<\/strong> with Manitoba Opera<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She will soon take on the role of the Mother in <em>Hansel and Gretel<\/em> with Montclair Chamber Ensemble Opera\u2014yet another opportunity to witness her exceptional talent.<\/p>\n<h3>A Champion for Indigenous Women\u2019s Voices<\/h3>\n<p>Beyond the stage, Camryn has been recognized by numerous organizations for her academic excellence, cultural advocacy, and dedication to community engagement. Her accolades include the <strong>Association of American University Women Scholarship<\/strong>, <strong>Canadian Federation of University Women Scholarship<\/strong>, <strong>Modern M\u00e9tis Woman Scholarship<\/strong>, <strong>Les Michif Otipemisiwak Fellowship<\/strong>, and the <strong>Association of Opera in Canada Fellowship<\/strong>\u2014reflecting her steadfast commitment to uplifting Indigenous stories in the arts.<\/p>\n<h3>About Fulbright Canada<\/h3>\n<p>Established in 1946, the <strong>Fulbright Program<\/strong> has supported over 325,000 students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists, and artists across 155 countries.
