Cali School of Music<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"356\" data-end=\"386\">Montclair State University<\/strong> is proud to announce that acclaimed Haitian-American musician <strong data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"466\">Leyla McCalla<\/strong> will join the school as <strong data-start=\"491\" data-end=\"544\">Artist-in-Residence for the 2025\u201326 academic year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"952\">Born in New York City to Haitian emigrants and activists, <strong data-start=\"605\" data-end=\"616\">McCalla<\/strong> draws deep inspiration from her heritage, channeling three centuries of history into music that transcends boundaries. A master of the cello, tenor banjo, and guitar, McCalla sings in English, French, and Haitian Krey\u00f2l and has developed a distinctive sound rooted in classical training, American folk, and Haitian cultural traditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"1406\">McCalla first rose to prominence as a member of the Grammy Award-winning string band <strong data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1067\">Carolina Chocolate Drops<\/strong>, and later as a founding member of <strong data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1127\">Our Native Daughters<\/strong> (with <strong data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1154\">Rhiannon Giddens<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1173\">Amythyst Kiah<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1198\">Allison Russell<\/strong>). Her solo work continues to garner wide acclaim for its emotional depth and cultural insight. Her latest album, <em data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1334\">Sun Without the Heat<\/em> (ANTI-, 2025), reflects the tension and joy of personal transformation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1740\">Throughout her residency, McCalla will mentor students, collaborate across disciplines, and present performances and workshops as part of the <strong data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1586\">Cali Immersive Residency Program<\/strong>.
