Can I attend both Lavender Graduation Celebration and Commencement?

Yes! We encourage students to attend their school’s convocation ceremonies and university commencement as well. Our ceremony is scheduled so that will not conflict with any other graduation ceremony.

Can straight allies participate in the Lavender Graduation Celebration?

Yes! Straight allies are definitely welcome to participate in our Lavender Graduates Ceremony. You do not have to identify as LGBTQ in order to participate.

What should I bring/wear to the Lavender Graduation Celebration?

Students should feel comfortable wearing whatever they wish, however business causal is fine. Students are not expected to wear their graduation cap and gowns.

What should I not bring to Lavender Graduates Celebration?

Please do not bring air horns, megaphones, or any other items that make loud, disruptive noises. Please advise your guests to do the same.

Should I attend the Pride Awards as well? 

The Lavender Graduates Celebration is a segment of our Pride Awards event. We hope you will be able to join us for the entire event. 

Can I invite family and friends to the event?

Yes! We hope that you will invite your families, friends and faculty members to witness your successes! 

Who started this type of ceremony?

This celebration was created in 1995 by Ronni Sanlo at the University of Michigan. Also known as “Lavender Graduation,” this ceremony takes place at colleges and universities across the nation.
