Through a study of a range of texts from the early Middle Ages to the eve of the Renaissance, we will attempt to answer this question. Our texts will be drawn from narrative, poetic, and theatrical traditions. Texts to include: <em>La Chanson de Roland<\/em>, <em>Tristan et Iseut<\/em>, selected <em>Lais<\/em> by Marie de France, <em>Aucassin et Nicolette<\/em>, selected <em>fabliaux<\/em> and <em>farces<\/em>, and Fran\u00e7ois Villon\u2019s <em>Testament<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Online with Dr. Loysen<\/p>\n<h3>Fall 2020<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Registration begins Wed., April 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FREN521: Translation, Reading &amp; Culture [CRN: 47072]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conducted in French. Introduction to translation practice through evaluation of a series of texts meant to help students explore the special textual and cultural difficulties inherent in the translation process. Students will explore the role culture plays in all areas of translation, across a variety of subject areas (such as literature, business, medicine, media, and technology). Special emphasis will be paid to how ideas, words, and sentences are transposed across cultures, languages, and contexts, using methods of textual analysis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Online asynchronous with Dr. Loysen<\/p>\n<p><strong>FREN535: <em>Les Mis<\/em> and More: Victor Hugo&#8217;s Legacy [CRN: 47073]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conducted in French. This graduate-level course focuses on the ways in which Victor Hugo\u2019s writing, artwork, politics, and commitment to social justice influenced nineteenth-century French society.
