What makes a place ‘historic’? Through hands-on exploration of both Hinchliffe Stadium and its museum, students will discover the rich history and lasting legacy of this landmark. Guided by museum educators, our youngest learners will investigate what makes Hinchliffe Stadium truly historic!

Around the Bases
Using baseball cards as a starting point, students will explore the history of the Negro Leagues, including its team owners and players, to engage in discussions about segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

Barrier Breakers
As they travel through the Muth Museum, students will engage with the stories of Larry Doby and Jackie Robinson, and their respective roles in the integration of the Major Leagues. Through the use of primary sources, students will learn more about the reaction that they received from journalists and fans alike upon signing with their respective teams.

In Other News
Students will examine sports sections from newspapers of the 1930s and 1940s, comparing coverage from white-owned and African American-owned publications. This analysis will prompt discussions about media representation and serve as a springboard for exploring the Civil Rights Movement. Students will also learn about Larry Doby’s groundbreaking role in integrating Major League Baseball as the first African American player in the American League, and reflect on his experiences during this pivotal time in history.
