Fall 2013 Athletics Seasons Kick Off

Football, men's and women's soccer, field hockey and volleyball begin 2013 campaigns

The fall sports season is here and it’s time to get out there and cheer on the Red Hawks as Montclair State’s football, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball teams kick off their 2013 seasons!

In 2012, the teams enjoyed the most successful fall season in school history, with an impressive combined record of 84-23-4 a .775 winning percentage. Three of the five teams not only made the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships but also went on to appear in their respective NCAA National Tournaments. And this year, the Red Hawks are aiming even higher!

Field Hockey
Last season, the Red Hawk field hockey team
the first women’s team in school history to play in a national championship game – fell one win short of becoming national champions. “We are excited for the start of the 2013 season,” says Beth Gottung, field hockey head coach. “After playing for a National Championship, we have high expectations. We return a great core group of veteran players from 2012.”

The team starts off the season on Friday, August 30, playing Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania and will face off against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in its first home game on August 31.

Women’s Soccer
The third team selected No. 1 in an NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the women’s soccer team opens its season nationally ranked at No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 Poll. Led by NJAC Coach of the Year Pat Naughter, the team kicks off its season on August 30 with an away game against Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. “We’re very optimistic about the 2013 season,” says Naughter. “We have a great group of returning players and we’ll be adding an excellent recruiting class as well as a couple of transfers. The current group of players has done a great job of establishing themselves as one of the best teams in the region.”

Come cheer the team on in its opening home game against Purchase College on September 4, and watch for junior defender Taylor Rudd. “She’s a two-time All-Conference player and the backbone of the team,” notes Mike Scala, director of sports information.

Head volleyball coach Eddie Stawinksi brings back a group of veteran players, including All-NJAC selections Kaitlyn Irwin and Marta Topor, in a team that tied the school record for wins in a season in 2012 at 22-11. The “Dark Horse” in the NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the team anticipates another outstanding season, which opens on August 31 with games in New York City against NYU and SUNY-Geneseo.

Men’s Soccer
With an NSCAA Preseason Top 25 ranking of No. 6, the men’s soccer team hopes to reach the NCAA Sectional Final for a third consecutive year in 2013. Head coach Todd Tumelty returns a team led by First Team All-America midfielder Dan Mendoza in an opener on August 31 against Emmanuel College in Springfield, Massachusetts. The team faces Hunter College on September 4 in its first home game of the season.

It wouldn’t be fall without football. The Red Hawks open their season on September 7 against Lebanon Valley in the NJAC-MAC Challenge, and will play their first home game on September 14 against Salve Regina. Head coach Rick Giancola, who is entering the season as the Division III active coach with the most wins, led the 2012 team to a third place NJAC finish. Senior All-Conference picks Matt Mancino and Dan Avento will look to lead the team to a winning season.

The Red Hawks will battle SUNY-Cortland at the October 12 Homecoming Game. Join friends and family at 2:00 p.m. to cheer the team to victory.
