Montclair State Celebrates 4th Annual Transgender Visibility Week

Transgender Visibility Week is hosted by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Center in collaboration with the Center for Student Involvement, the Office of Greek Life, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, Health Promotion, The Student Center, Theta Delta Sigma, Society, Inc., and the Office of the President. 

All Week

  • Transgender Flag Sale and Info Table
    12-2 p.m. in the Student Center Lobby
    Purchase a transgender flag for only $2. Money raised helps Montclair students attend Creating Change - a national conference by the National LGBTQ Task Force.

  • “Wings” - An Art Exhibit
    All Week in the Student Center Annex
    View the profound photography of undergraduate student, Ashley Alleyene. Earlier this year, Ashley lost one of her high school friends, Sam, to suicide. Sam was a transgender woman. Ashley’s project, “Wings” is meant to empower, inspire, and raise awareness for the trans community. The series consists of fashion portraits, and quotes from the models she photographed this summer.

  • Theta Delta Sigma Trans Lifeline Fundraiser
    Theta Delta Sigma Society, Inc. is a gender-inclusive multicultural society at Montclair State which strives to make "diversity the rule instead of the exception.” This month, members of the organization will be selling Yankee candles to raise funds for Trans Lifeline, a non-profit organization dedicated to the well being of transgender people. Trans Lifeline is a hotline staffed by transgender people for transgender people. You too can purchase a Yankee candle and help raise money for this incredible cause.   • “In Search of the Feminine in the Divine” by Candace Feit
    5:30 p.m. in Dickson Hall 179
    Feit, who is a documentary photographer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and National Geographic Magazine, will share her recent work photographing one of India’s gender non-conforming communities.

  • Transcending Boundaries: Transgender Empowerment
    4-5:30 p.m. in Student Center Ballroom C
    This discussion/support space is for students who identify as transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, bigender, gender fluid, gender non-conforming, or any other non-cisgender or gender non-binary identity. Join the conversation on empowerment and self-advocacy!

    Note: This is an informal, confidential space for transgender students. If you do not identify as transgender, 

    we ask that you respect their privacy and practice good allyship by not entering this space. 

    Students looking to observe in order to fulfill academic requirements will NOT be permitted. Those students should instead register to attend an informative Safe Space Training session or email lgbtq@mail.montclair.edu for assistance.

    A discussion and support group space for bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, fluid and queer-identified students and their allies. Non-binary gender and sexuality topics discussed each week.

  • Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil
    5-8 p.m. in the Student Center Quad
    Join us on Thursday, November 17th for International Transgender Day of Remembrance. Our candle light vigil will raise public awareness of hate crimes against trans people, provide a space for public mourning, and honor the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten.

  • Safe Space Training
    9 a.m.-1 p.m. Student Center, Rooms 411-414
    Limited space is available - pre-registration is required.
    Safe Space training is an intensive, interactive training that provides attendees with information and tools to combat homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, cissexism, and heterosexism, on campus and beyond. Only individuals who have gone through the Safe Space Program and have agreed to the expectations of its membership are able to display the sticker/button of our program.

    International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
