Rocky the Red Hawk Celebrates His Sweet 16

Last Thursday, October 5, 2017 was Rocky the Red Hawk's 16th birthday. Sixteen years ago, students voted to name the Red Hawk, Rocky, and so Rocky the Red Hawk has been around since October 5, 2001.

How Did We Celebrate?

The birthday celebrations started bright and early that morning with Rocky and his team handing out 500 free bagels all over campus, courtesy of Residence Life. They drove around in a golf cart while singing happy birthday with a hundred bagels at a time. Students were instructed to follow @RockyTheRedHawk on Snapchat to find his current location throughout the morning. Later on in the day, Rocky gave out invitations to his party and bags of candy on the golf cart once again. Students took selfies with him and were encouraged to use the #RockySweet16.

The Party of the Year

The Student Center Ballroom was the best place to be on campus last Thursday. Over 800 students, faculty and staff attended the party to help Rocky celebrate his special day. As soon as the guests walked in, they received an empty goodie bag to fill up with freebies when they stopped by each of the 16 tables. There were pens, lanyards, stress balls and even t-shirts to name some of the giveaways, all thanks to:

  • Campus Recreation
  • Center for Leadership Development (CLD)
  • Center for Student Involvement (CSI)
  • Commuter Student Programs and Services (CSPS)
  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
  • Dining Services
  • Graduate School
  • Greek Life
  • Health Promotion
  • Montclair State Athletics
  • Office of Equity and Diversity
  • Peak Performances
  • RecBoard
  • Red Hawks of Montclair State
  • Residence Life
  • Student Government Association (SGA)
  • Summer Sessions and Winter Sessions
  • Team Rocky
  • University Bookstore
  • Volunteer Resource Center
  • WMSC Radio
Students said they loved the idea of having different organizations come be a part of this event.  It was a great way to get the word out about certain departments and clubs, especially for freshmen or anyone new to Montclair State.

What's A Party Without Cake?

After everyone made their way around the perimeter of the ballroom, they took pictures in the photo booth and hit the dance floor with Rocky. Like any birthday party, Rocky had a table full of cupcakes and a huge birthday cake (with red and white icing, of course).

All students were given raffle tickets when they swiped in, so there was a drawing at the end to finish off the party. Some of the prizes included gym bags, yoga mats, Montclair State University apparel, bookstore gift cards and 10 Red Hawk Deck parking passes. Whenever a raffle number was being called, students would sigh if it didn't match their number or applaud when someone else claimed a prize. The raffle prizes were donated to Rocky's party by:

  • Campus Recreation
  • Dean of Students
  • Graduate School
  • Montclair State Alumni
  • Montclair State Athletics
  • Parking Services
  • Student Communications
  • Team Rocky
  • University Bookstore
All of the students who attended Rocky's Sweet 16 had smiles on their faces the entire time, so it was definitely a successful event. Hopefully Rocky's future birthday parties can live up to this one. Thank you to everyone who helped him celebrate his special day!
