What is Elect Her
The Montclair State University Women’s Center is proud to announce that we have been selected by Running Start to host our second year of the Elect Her Campaign, a national program to encourage and train college women to run for student government and political office. During this one-day, 4-hour training, participants will learn and practice hands-on campaign skills, hear from inspiring speakers, and discuss research on women in government. The skills learned in this workshop, like networking and building an elevator speech, will transfer to many leadership opportunities throughout their life, not just student government.
Why is Elect Her Necessary on our Campus?
This incredibly important opportunity is vital for our campus in order to increase the number of women in the Montclair State University Student Government Association and at all levels of government. Research shows that engaging in leadership opportunities at an early age is vital to a woman’s overall political success. When the American University’s Women & Politics Institute surveyed women serving in the U.S. Congress, they found that over 53% of the congresswomen served in student government in high school, college, or both. Elect Her addresses these issues and establishes a pipeline for women in politics. 98% of the 2016 Elect Her class felt that the workshop positively impacted their decision to run for office in the future, and 100% said that they would recommend the workshop to a friend.
What Does an Elect Her Workshop Look Like?
Campus administrators, students, and local AAUW members collaborate with AAUW and Running Start staff to plan the trainings each year. Participants practice hands-on campaign skills, hear from inspiring local speakers, and discuss research on women in government.
All Montclair State University female students are welcomed to apply for admission into the Elect Her Workshop. Applications are due no later than 5:00 pm on Monday, February 12, 2018. If interested in attending this great leadership opportunity, please register here.
