Ireland’s Heralded CoisCèim Dance Company Comes to Peak Performances @ Montclair with “Knots”

Production based on the writings of R.D. Laing and directed by Liam Steel (Stan Won’t Dance) Thursday, March 6 through Sunday, March 9

Ireland’s high-energy dance company CoisCèim (pronounced Kush Came, the Gaelic word for footstep), led by Artistic Director David Bolger, makes its only East Coast appearance on its USA tour with Knots at Peak Performances @ Montclair State University. This marks Bolger’s return to Peak Performances, where he choreographed the world premiere of Mícheál Ósúilleabháin’s Madison’s Descent in May 2006. Using high-octane choreography and the insightful writings of psychoanalyst R.D. Laing, Knots takes us through a series of passionate physical and verbal confrontations as it tries to unravel the twists and turns of life with someone else. The dynamic crooks and convolutions in our relationships are played out in dialogue scenarios, which the company uses as their starting point to create a piece that skillfully fuses text and movement.

Choreographed and directed by Liam Steel (of the acclaimed companies DV8 and Stan Won’t Dance), Knots takes the audience through a series of passionate and sometimes violent fights and arguments filled with sexual tension and explores the torturous twists and turns that are part of many of today’s relationships. Premiered at the Samuel Beckett Theatre in Dublin as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival in September 2005, this intense work garnered rave reviews. Knots is the perfect fusion of CoisCèim’s spirited dancing and Liam Steel’s raw, gripping physicality and choreographic style.

R.D. Laing’s groundbreaking book Knots, published in 1970, charts the psychological knots and binds that we find ourselves entangled in when we are part of a relationship. Through the medium of concrete poetry, he suggests ways to untangle those knots through psychotherapy, role-play and games.

Peak Performances @ Montclair has become one of the premiere dance showcases in the nation, who The New York Times has labeled as ‘indispensable.” In the recent past, it has commissioned and presented work by the top tier of dance artists working today, including Susan Marshall, Charlotte Vincent and Trisha Brown.
