Dr. Antonia Novello, the first woman and the first Hispanic to become the Surgeon General of the United States, will be awarded an honorary doctoral degree at Montclair State University commencement ceremonies on Monday, May 22. Also receiving honorary doctoral degrees will be the Rev. William H. Gray III, president and chief executive officer of the College Fund (formerly the United Negro College Fund), and the Rev. Dr. DeForest B. Soaries Jr., New Jersey's Secretary of State.
Novello will receive a Doctor of Science degree while Gray and Soaries will receive Doctor of Laws degrees. MSU's commencement ceremonies will be held at Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in Rutherford starting at 10:30 a.m.
