The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University Presents Two Hot Jazz Performances: Jeff Kunkel and Friends and the MSU Jazz Ensemble

The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University presents two exciting jazz concerts on April 19th and April 27th. These fine performance events take place in the Alexander Kasser Theater where all performances are $15.

Jeff Kunkel and Friends – Jeff Kunkel, jazz piano performs with special guests Holli Ross, vocals; Claudio Roditi, trumpet; Darmon Meader, saxophone; David Bixler, saxophone; Itaiguira Brandão, bass; and Sergio Gomes, drums in an afternoon of hot Brazilian Jazz. This performance takes place on Saturday, April 19th at 3:00 p.m.

MSU Jazz Band – The MSU Jazz Band under the direction of Jeff Kunkel and the MSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Holli Ross, present an afternoon of jazz favorites. Special guest soloist for the performance is jazz harmonica and vibes virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens. This performance takes place on Sunday, April 27th at 3:00 p.m.

About Jeff Kunkel - Jeffrey Kunkel, D.Ed., serves as Coordinator of Music Education and as director of the MSU Jazz Band, which performs at festivals throughout the Tri-State area, including the Villanova Jazz Festival, University of the Arts Jazz Festival, and New York Vocal Jazz Festival. Kunkel is serving his third term as president of the New Jersey chapter of the International Association for Jazz Education, and is Jazz Procedures Chair for the New Jersey Music Educators Association. An active jazz pianist, composer, adjudicator, and clinician; he was selected to direct the Pennsylvania District IV Jazz Band in 2007. He also conducted the 2006 and 2002 New Jersey Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble, the 2003 New Jersey Region II Jazz Ensemble, and the 2000 New Jersey Region I Jazz Ensemble. He can be heard on a CD release by jazz trumpeter and composer Peter Sciaino. He was also featured prominently on piano, keyboards, and trumpet on the 2001 CD release by singer/songwriter Julie Aaron entitled Borrowed Time.
