Lura, Captivating Cape Verde Singer Will Perform at Peak Performances @ Montclair on April 5

Lura performs in the Alexander Kasser Theater on the campus of Montclair State University as part of Peak Performances @ Montclair on Saturday, April 5th at 8 p.m. This evening of exotic melodies and rhythms has its roots in Lura's Cape Verde heritage.

Born in Portugal to parents from the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of West Africa, Lura is part of a new generation of musicians rediscovering the hidden traditions of their ancestral homeland. Mixing morna style made famous by Cesaria Evora with the lesser-known rhythms of funana and batuque, Lura, backed by her six-piece band, uses her sensuous voice and evocative dancing to transport audiences to that volcanic archipelago, where the pungent blend of trade route cultures has created a unique musical tradition that has tremendous popular appeal. The New York Times said, “She danced with sensual grace and sang in a richly poised alto that held memories of Africa.” Joining Lura for this high-energy performance are musicians Guillaume Singer on violin, Kau Morais on drums, Jair Pina on percussion, Toy Vieira at the piano, Vaiss Dias on guitar and Russo Figueiredo playing bass guitar.

Tickets for Lura are only $15. To order your tickets call the Box Office at 973-655-5112 or order online at
