The Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University Presents Danceworks 2008

Four Brubeck Pieces by Murray Louis performed with live music featuring the Eric Mintel Quartet with additional works by Martha Graham and Bill T. Jones

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University presents Danceworks 2008, a program under the artistic direction of Lori Katterhenry and Nancy Lushington. The performances take place in Memorial Auditorium and run from April 16th to April 20th and are part of Peak Performances @ Montclair. Tickets for these performances are $15 for the general public. There is no charge for MSU undergraduates with a valid ID card.

A retrospective of work by several luminaries of American modern dance, the program includes pieces by three of America’s most celebrated choreographers. The performance will feature Steps in the Street by Martha Graham, Four Brubeck Pieces by Murray Louis and D Man in the Waters by Bill T. Jones.

Steps in the Street (Martha Graham) – First performed in 1936, this piece is an extract from Chronicle, a work that opposed the Spanish Civil War. Denise Vale, renowned Graham alumna and Senior Artistic Associate Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company selected the student dancers who will perform in this piece that reflects the devastation and hopelessness of war.

Four Brubeck Pieces (Murray Louis) – This piece premiered in 1984 with music by jazz legends Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Donna Scro Gentile (Freespace) and Joelle Van Sickle, both alumnae of the dance program at Montclair State, direct this engaging piece that features the Eric Mintel Quartet performing live. Dave Brubeck himself noted that, "As long as the music attracts dedicated young musicians like Eric Mintel, jazz will continue to thrive and progress as a voice of freedom. The world needs their voices." As an added bonus, the quartet will open each performance with a 15-minute jazz set.

D Man in the Waters (Bill T. Jones) – Originally choreographed in 1989, this joyous work set to Felix Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E Flat Major Op. 20 was dedicated to Demain Acquavella (D Man). This piece, created by one of the most important choreographic voices of our time, is the last of the yearlong activities that honor Mr. Jones at Montclair State University.
