Men's Basketball Goes Overtime to Beat TCNJ

Montclair, NJ (12/06/08)- Sophomores Sean Young (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) and James Williams (Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow) each scored six points in overtime and finished with 22 and 20, respectively as Montclair State posted its fourth straight win with an 84-79 victory over The College of New Jersey in NJAC men's basketball action at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Daniel McRae (Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Red Hawks moved past the .500 mark at 4-3 overall while moving to 2-0 in the NJAC.

Junior guard Jay Frank (Brick, NJ /Brick Memorial) had 17 points and five rebounds for TCNJ, which fell to4-3 with the loss. The Lions were playing their first conference contest this season.

A frantic final 3:17 in regulation ended after Frank's jumper at the buzzer rattled off the rim. That came after Williams tied the contest  with 11 seconds left on a driving layup.

In the extra period, Montclair jumped out to a 71-68 lead as Williams converted a three-point play 23 seconds in. Steven Siracusa ( New Providence, NJ / New Providence) sank two free throws to pull TCNJ within a point, but Young converted a three-point play of his own with3:30 to go and Williams drained a three-pointer from the left side as the Red Hawks went up 77-70 with 2:56 remaining.

A Siracusa foul shot with 32 seconds left got TCNJ within 80-77 but Young and Jon Georges ( West Orange, NJ / St. Peter's Prep) each connected at the foul line a Montclair by five with 20 ticks to play. Siracusa got a layup with nine seconds to go, but Young capped off his day by making two at the foul line for the final 84-79 margin.

Montclair led a majority of the first half and was up as many as seven early before the Lions rallied inside the final 4:27. Trailing 35-30, New Jersey closed the half on an 11-2 run as Molinelli ignited the spurt with a pair of free throws. Blackmon-Hayes gave the Lions their first lead at 37-35with 3:33 to play and a jumper by Frank put TCNJ in front by four with2:30 remaining. A McRae jumper cut the deficit to 39-37 but Aaron Syvertsen ( Midland Park, NJ / Midland Park) scored just ahead of the halftime buzzer as TCNJ led 41-37 at the break.

In the second half, Montclair quickly erased that halftime deficit in the first 30seconds and took a five-point lead at 55-50 on a Dudley jumper at 13:40left. TCNJ would come back and tie the game on two occasions before taking a 62-61 lead with 3:41 to play on Frank jumper. A Molinelli jumper gave TCNJ a 67-62 advantage with 1:24 left, but Williams hit twice from the free-throw line to get MSU within three and he later finished off a break with 58 seconds to go as the Red Hawks closed to 67-66. Molinelli would make the second of two foul shots with 32seconds left. That would give Montclair an opportunity, one that it would take as Williams knotted the score for the sixth time to send the game into overtime.

Freshman guard Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ /East Orange Campus) finished with 10 points and three steals for Montclair as the Red Hawks received nine points, four rebounds and six assists from junior guard Ken Dudley (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech). Georges had seven points and five boards with freshman Paul Siljee ( Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) chipping in with six points and five rebounds.

Siracusa (team-high eight rebounds), junior forward Steve Feinberg ( Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and senior Jeff Molinelli ( Pennington, NJ / Hopewell Valley) each had 12 points for New Jersey. Eric Blackmon-Hayes ( Plainfield, NJ / Westfield) added nine points and six assists while William Jett (Browns Mills, NJ / Pemberton Township) added seven points and five rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, December 10 as the Red Hawks close out their three-game homestand with a 7:30 matchup against Berkeley College. TCNJ is out of action until Friday, December 19 as the Lions face Wesley College in Dover, Delaware at 7:00 pm.
