Montclair, NJ (1/31/09) – Freshman guard Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) scored a season-high 23 points and paced four players in double figures as Montclair State maintained its lead in the New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division with a 75-68 win over Rutgers-Camden in a conference inter-divisional contest at the MSU Student Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Paul Siljee ( Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) added 13 points off the bench as the Red Hawks moved to 15-5 on the year, 7-2 in conference play. MSU entered the day with a one-game lead over both William Paterson and Rutgers-Newark for the division lead.

Montclair State has now won seven straight games and 30 of its last 31 against Rutgers-Camden. The Red Hawks lead the all-time series, 40-8.

Junior guard Joshua Askew ( Sicklerville, NJ / Winslow Township) had 21 points, five rebounds and four assists for Rutgers-Camden, which dropped to 4-16 overall, 0-9 in the NJAC South Division with its seventh consecutive defeat. Askew’s big night passed his previous career high of 20 points, set against William Paterson on Jan. 12, 2008. It also allowed him to pass the 500-point plateau for his career, hiking his total to 512.

Rutgers-Camden led 8-5 with 13 minutes left in the first half as Askew scored on a layup. However, Montclair State would go on a 19-7 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the contest. Siljee gave MSU the lead with a three-pointer and Jon Georges ( West Orange, NJ / St. Peter’s Prep) scored for a 12-8 advantage. Mix would score five consecutive points to boost the lead to eight before Tom Bonard’s (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) three-pointer with 4:39 left put Montclair in front 24-15. James Williams ( Englewood, NJ / Dwight Morrow) hit two free throws before the halftime buzzer as Montclair went into the locker room up 31-17.

In the second half, Montclair would get up by 17 at 36-19 as Mix finished off a break, however the Scarlet Raptors trimmed the deficit to 11 as Tarik Hanton (Philadelphia, PA / Kensington) sank two foul shots to make the score 36-25 with 16:36 to play.

From that point the Montclair lead would fluctuate between 10 and 14 points until 1:42 remaining when Bill Banks (Berlin, NJ / Eastern Regional) connected on a three-pointer to get Rutgers-Camden within 69-61. But the Red Hawks would close out the contest going 6-of-7 at the foul line to register the seven-point victory.

Bonard finished with 11 points for MSU, which got seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds from sophomore Sean Young ( Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood). Williams chipped in with 10 points for MSU, which overcame a rough game at the foul line as the Red Hawks connected on 28-of-41 attempts at the charity stripe.

Banks had 14 points for Rutgers-Camden, including a pair of three-pointers as he became the ninth player overall and the second in three seasons to move past the century mark for career three-pointers at Rutgers-Camden. Banks has 101 in his three-plus seasons with the Scarlet Raptors. Hanton had seven points off the bench while Chris Clahar ( Philadelphia, PA / Robert Lamberton) and Rory Thornton ( Vauxhall, NJ / Union) each had six points. Askew also added four assists and three steals, giving him 150 in each category for his career.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, February 4. Montclair State is at New Jersey City University for a 6:00 pm tipoff with the Gothic Knights. Rutgers-Camden is also home facing Rowan University at Gloucester Community College at the same time.
