Montclair State University’s Department of Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports was honored with two awards at the 34th Annual Conference of the New Jersey Recreation and Parks Association (NJRPA) held on March 2 and 3 in Atlantic City. The department received “The Agency Showcase Award” for its “MSU Walks” campaign flyer and “The Excellence in Design Award” for the Student Recreation Center.

Accepting the awards on behalf of the University was Karen Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life. “The University is very appreciative of this award because it acknowledges what we know—providing a place for students to recreate and relax is an important part of developing the whole student and helps them to establish good habits that will last a lifetime.” she said.

Awarded for “excellence in printed material which encourages participation in recreation activities or promotes health and wellness programs,” the Agency Showcase Award was presented to Campus Recreation for the flyer they created for the MSU Walks campaign launched in October 2008. MSU Walks, which was created to help build a sense of community while promoting better health, features separate walking paths around the campus for participants to enjoy.

The Excellence in Design Award, which is presented for “design excellence in recreation and park facilities available for public use,” went to the Student Recreation Center. The striking yet functional, 78,000-square-foot building houses a six-lane swimming pool, locker rooms, a two-court gymnasium with elevated running track, two racquetball courts, two-level fitness, strength and cardio training areas, space for aerobics and other fitness activities, offices, and a café.

An instant hit with students, faculty and staff since opening its doors in 2008, the Center continues to grow in popularity and use, and has become an integral part of the University. On March 24, 2009, the Student Recreation Center will be celebrating its first anniversary. Campus Recreation has planned a birthday party to mark the occasion and everyone is invited. Come join the celebration at the Center from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
