TCNJ Slips Past Women's Soccer in Double-OT, 1-0

Montclair, NJ (9/27/09) – Junior midfielder Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) knocked in a loose ball with 6:36 remaining in the second overtime period as eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey slipped past Montclair State, 1-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer contest at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) made just one save in recording her sixth shutout of the year as the Lions rebounded from their first loss of the season and improved to 8-1 overall, 2-1 in the NJAC.

Senior goalkeeper Leah Tepperman (North Andover, MA / North Andover) stopped seven shots for MSU, which dropped to 5-3 overall, 1-2 in the conference.

The Lions outshot Montclair State 16-3, however TCNJ could not come up with a score until the 104th minute of the contest when Tepperman came out to make smothering stop of a ball pushed inside the box. But the ball bounced out leaving Caruso with an open net. The junior then chipped the ball into the middle-right portion of the goal for her fourth of the year and her second game-winning tally of 2009.

Neither team would be able to muster much offensive as TCNJ recorded the only two shots in the first half and both were from 40-plus yards away from the goal. In the second half, the Lions stepped up the pressure outshooting MSU 9-. Tepperman made four in the 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Montclair State would finally get a shot off in the 57th minute when Christen Stoehlein’s (Marlton, NJ / Seneca) attempt went wide.

Despite being outshot through regulation, Montclair State got the first opportunity in the first extra period. Jackie McGrath (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) moved the ball down the right side before unleashing a shot that Clarke easily handled for her only save of the game.  New Jersey would make Tepperman stop two more in the period and the Lions’ nearly won it in the closing seconds however Allyson Anderson’s shot went high.

The Lions got another chance 1:15 into the second overtime as Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ / Immaculate Heart)  went 1-on-1 with Tepperman along the left side. She would draw Tepperman off the line, but her shot sailed wide left.

Both teams return to action with road NJAC contests on Wednesday, September 30. Montclair State is in Union to face Kean University at 7:30 pm while the Lions head to Camden to face Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 pm.
