Men Finish 5th, Women 7th at Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships; Two New Records Set on Final Day

Piscataway, NJ (2/21/10) – Junior Galina Loutchouk (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) broke her own school record in the 1650 freestyle while the men’s 400 freestyle relay team set a new record as well as the Montclair State men’s swimming and diving team finished fifth and the women seventh as the 2010 Metropolitan Conference Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close at Rutgers University’s Sonny Werblin Center on Sunday.

The Red Hawk men’s team finished fifth in the field of 18 Division II and III squads and fourth among D3 institutions as it totaled 540 points over the three days of competition. Meanwhile the MSU women finished third among the Division III schools and seventh overall (of 21 teams) as it accumulated 583 points in the 40 events contested.

The two records set on Sunday afternoon gave MSU four for the Metropolitan Championships.

Loutchouk re-established her own mark set a year ago at the meet as she posted a time of 18:35.56 to place sixth overall. The time was nearly a second faster than a year ago when she swam 18:36.31 in 2009.  Jessica Patalano (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) was 15th in the event as she swam 19:23.15.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay team of Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East), Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North), Blaise Lacca (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) and Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) smashed a 14-year-old record as they placed fifth overall in the event. After swimming 3:13.91 in the morning preliminaries, the quartet came back with a 3:11.09 in the finals to break the mark set during the 1996 Metropolitan Championships.

Elsewhere on the final day of action, the women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge), Christina Crossin (Milford, CT / Lauralton Hall), Jacky Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) placed sixth in the event as they clocked in at 3:43.41.

Spadoni added her second Top 5 finish of the meet as she was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.32) while Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) was 14th in the 200 backstroke (2:17.81). Vallone was 12th in the 100 freestyle (55.29) with Laura Flynn (Andover, NJ / Lenape) and Loutchouk finishing 13th (2:19.75) and 14th (2:20.67) respectively in the 200 butterfly.

For the men Nikloas Lumkong (Andover, NJ / Pope John XXIII) was 15th in the 200 butterfly (2:09.39 / 2:05.90 prelims) with Shawn Chambrovich (Allenhurst, NJ / Red Bank Regional) placing the same in the 200 backstroke (2:03.79 / 2:01.67 prelims). Daniel Gordon (Northfield, NJ / Mainland Regional) and Matt Hyde (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) were 12th (17.47.00) and 14th (17:59.42) respectively in the 1650 freestyle with Westerberg finishing 12th in the 100 freestyle (47.76). Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) was 16th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.00.

In the diving sections, Jaclyn Beck (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) was sixth in the one-meter event as she totaled 350.55 points. Lauren Corrente (Nyack, NY / Nyack) was 12th (260.15 points). On the men’s side, Anthony Cacella (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) was 11th (247.75 points) in the three-meter competition.
