Rienecker Named Winner of Outstanding Academic Advising Award

Montclair, NJ (4/18/10) – Tara Rienecker, Coordinator, Student Development for Athletes, was named the winner of the 2010 Montclair State University Outstanding Academic Advising Awards Program. Rienecker was selected in the Academic Advisor primary role, which recognized her for her for outstanding work and excellence in the area of professional and faculty academic advising:

Rienecker will now be among those in consideration in the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) annual awards program. Last year, three out of the four MSU award winners received national recognition from NACADA.

Rienecker is now in her tenth year at Montclair State University. Rienecker has taken the Athletic Advising Program at MSU from a part time program to help student-athletes with academic issues, to the current program servicing and assisting close to 500 student-athletes through, Student Development for Athletes. In those ten years, she has added many programs for the student-athletes at MSU.

One of the most notable is the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. She has received numerous small grants such as the NCAA Health and Safety grant four times over, the NCAA ethnic minority and women’s internship grant, the NCAA Division III leadership grant, and has applied for and sent twelve students athletes to seven different leadership conferences in the last four years since becoming a member of CHAMPS.

Rienecker is also the advisor for T.A.L.O.N. (Teaching Athletes Leadership Opportunities Now) a peer leadership group for student-athlete leaders at MSU that conducts several community service projects throughout the academic year.
