Swimming & Diving Topped by Stevens in Season Openers


Montclair, NJ  (10/16/10) – The Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened up their 2010-11 season on Saturday with the Red Hawks dropping a dual meet to Stevens at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool.

The Ducks knocked off MSU on the men’s side 171-86 and posted a 146-111 win over the Red Hawks in the women’s race. Stevens also highlighted the day with two new Panzer Pool records. Freshman Louise Moores (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) set a new mark in the 100 butterfly as she swam 58.96 in winning the event. Also the Ducks’ 400 freestyle relay team on the men’s side established a new pool record as they timed in at 3:16.51. 

For Montclair State, freshman Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) and senior Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) were each double-winners for the Red Hawks. Freshman Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) was also victorious in his collegiate debut as he took top honors in the 1000 freestyle.

Donahue won both backstroke races as she took the 100 event in a time of 1:04.33 before coming back to win the 200 event, timing in at 2:19.02. Spadoni accomplished the same feat in the breaststroke winning the 100 in a time of 1:11.82 and the 200 with a time of 2:38.15.

Berry won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:33.52.

Montclair State returns to action next Saturday, October 23 as they travel to Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey in their first NJAC meet of the year.
