Box Score

Mahwah, NJ (10/27/10) -  Freshman Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) scored off a corner kick in the 29th minute which turned out to be the game-winning goal as Montclair State slipped past Ramapo College, 2-1 in NJAC women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Hawks finished their conference slate at 3-5-1 however the win would prove to be bittersweet as Montclair was eliminated from the NJAC Tournament despite the victory. MSU ends their season at 7-8-3.

Montclair (10 points) needed to win and have either Kean or New Jersey City to falter in their contests as well as Rutgers-Newark losing to Richard Stockton. Kean knocked off first-place William Paterson, 2-0 while NJCU blanked Rutgers-Camden 1-0 to claim the final two spots as both teams ended with 12 points. It is the first time that Montclair has missed the conference tournament since its inception in 1999.

Before the outcome of those other two games, MSU needed a victory to have any chance and things looked bleak early as Ramapo scored on their second shot of the game as Kim Bruno tapped in an unassisted goal at 11:20 of the period.
The Red Hawks would battle back immediately tying the score less than six minutes later. Sophomore Rachel Senyszyn(Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) collected her team-leading ninth goal of the season as her shot from 30 yards slipped through the keepers hands.

Pero then gave Montclair the lead at 28:08. Off a corner kick, Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick)served a ball into the box within six yards where Pero was able to knock it in for her fourth of the season and a 2-1 MSU lead.

That’s the way the game stood as goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) made four saves in the second half and six overall in the game.

MSU outshot Ramapo, 21-10 with the Roadrunners holding a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
