Volleyball Falls to Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Tournament

Camden, NJ (11/2/10) – Junior co-captain Katherine Crosby (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) collected 16 kills – one shy of the program record for a three-set match – to power third-seeded Rutgers University-Camden over sixth-seeded Montclair State University, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship Tournament here Tuesday night.

Rutgers-Camden won by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.

The victory was the first ever for the Lady Raptors in NJAC tournament play and advances Rutgers-Camden to the conference semifinals. The Raptors will play a 7 p.m. match at second-seeded Ramapo College Thursday night.
Ramapo defeated Rutgers-Camden, 3-1, in Camden Oct. 28.

With Tuesday’s win, Rutgers-Camden improves to 18-12, adding to its program record for victories which is now seven higher than the mark the Lady Raptors set last season. Montclair State closes its season at 7-29.

Early in the season, the Lady Raptors posted a 3-0 sweep over Montclair State for their first win against the Red Hawks in nine series matches.  The Raptors made it two straight victories, but not without a few anxious moments in the last set. Leading 23-13, Rutgers-Camden watched Montclair State score eight of the next nine points to cut the cap to 24-21 before Crosby clinched the set and the match with a kill.

Sophomore middle hitter Kristin Koloski (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) had two big kills late in the decisive third set for Rutgers-Camden.

In the opening set, the Red Hawks took an early 1-0 lead before the Lady Raptors bounced back to build leads of 11-5 and 12-6. Montclair State chipped away to get within one point on two occasions, at 15-14 and at 19-18, but the Red Hawks were denied the tying point each time on their own long serve and on a kill by Rutgers-Camden sophomore Olivia Murphy (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling). Crosby clinched the set with two kills out of the Raptors’ last three points.
The second set featured six ties, the last at 16-16, before the Lady Raptors took the lead for good and went on to notch the victory.     

Crosby added four service aces and eight digs to her 16 kills, while hitting .400. Koloski and Murphy each finished with eight kills, while each adding two digs. Sophomore Rebecca Brown (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East added six kills to help Rutgers-Camden set a program record with 42 kills in a three-match set. The previous mark of 41 was accomplished twice against New Jersey City University (Oct. 20, 2009) and Immaculata University (Sept. 16, 2006). 

The Scarlet Raptors received 79 digs as a team, led by sophomores Catherine Tadeja (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) with 35, Brown with 15 and Rebecca Calabro (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) with 13. Tadeja added a match-high five service aces, while Brown added three. 

Sophomore setter Stephanie Miller (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) chipped in with 35 assists. 

Montclair State was paced by freshman outside hitter Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ/Bogota), who had six kills, six digs, two aces and two assisted blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and freshman opposite/outside hitter Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) each added four kills. Batiste collected 11 digs, eight assists and three assisted blocks, while Cockroft added five digs.

Freshman libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) notched 17 digs for the Red Hawks, while contributing two kills and one service ace. Irwin finished with a Montclair State single-season record 743 digs. Freshman middle blocker Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) had three aces, three digs, three assisted blocks and one assist.
