Women's Swimming and Diving Wins Third Straight; Red Hawks Beat Division I St. Peter's


Montclair, NJ (11/13/10) – The Montclair State women’s swimming and diving team stretched its winning streak to three as the Red Hawks topped St. Peter’s College in a combined dual meet at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks women downed St. Peter’s 132-91 for their third straight win (3-2), two of which have come against Division I and Division II schools. MSU defeated Drew University on Friday.

Meanwhile the Montclair State men split against St. Peter’s and New Jersey Tech. MSU fell to the Peacocks 121-51 and beat NJIT, 51-46 as the men are now 3-3 on the season.

For the Montclair State women, sophomore Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) won a pair of individual events while helping the 400 medley relay team to victory. Vallone won both short freestyle events taking first in the 50 and 100 events with times of 25.37 and 55.19, respectively. Vallone then anchored the relay quartet as she, Kelsi Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township), Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) and Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) posted a time of 4:13.37 to win that event.

Christina Crossin (Milford, CT /Lauralton Hall)
was second in both events to Vallone and then swam the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle which captured top honors. Crossin, Jacky Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford), Allie Golden (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) and Chelsea Cullen (South Plainfield, NJ / Bishop Ahr) combined for a time of 4:04.11

Divers Laura Hess (Berlin, NJ / Eastern) and Lauren Corrente (Nyack, NY / Nyack) each registered wins. Corrente won the first portion of the three-meter event with a score of 132.60 with Hess totaling 202.57 points to win the second-half of the event.

For the men, freshman Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) was second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:30.65 while sophomore Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) had the same placing in the 200 freestyle (1:50.72). Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Conner Politt (New Brunswick, NJ / Bishop Ahr) were second in the 50 freestyle and 200 butterfly, respectively. Long swam 22:03 with Pollitt clocking in at 2:10.70.

The Red Hawks return to action on Friday, November 19 as they take part in the Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University.
