Lee, Smith Shine Bright in Swimming and Diving Dual Meet Against Rowan


Montclair, NJ (1/22/11) – Competing in its first dual meet in 42 days, the Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won 10 of the swimming events contests, however it wasn’t enough as the Red Hawks dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference meet with Rowan University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) won three individual events and swam on first-place relay squad as the MSU men (5-5, 1-2 NJAC) fell to the Profs, 161-133. Senior Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) and sophomore Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) each won one event and then combined on a relay victory as the women’s squad (4-5, 1-2 NJAC) lost 169-123.

MSU had been out of competitive action since December 11 when it swept a dual meet from Ramapo College. 

Lee helped the Montclair State men off to a good start as he swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay team. Nikolas Lumkong (Byrum, NJ / Pope John XXIII), Lee, Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) posted a time of 1:40.72 for the win.

Lee collected a second win in the meet in the 100 breaststroke posting a time of 1:01.64 and made it three triumphs capturing the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.37. He capped off his impressive afternoon by taking top honors in the 200 individual medley (2:08.75). 

Sophomore Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) won two events of his own as he captured the 200 freestyle (1:47.37) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.17). Freshman Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) made it a 1-2 MSU finish in the 500 freestyle clocking in at 5:01.49. 

For the women, Spadoni and Vallone swam the second and fourth legs, respectively as the Red Hawks made it a sweep of the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:55.84. Freshman Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township)and junior Lauren Uckar (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) comprised the first and third legs of the quartet. 

Spadoni posted her individual win in the 100 breaststroke as she timed in at 1:10.21. Vallone would be victorious in the 100 freestyle (55.55) and Montclair added a third win as senior Galina Loutchouk (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) took first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:19.36.

The MSU men return to action on Wednesday, January 26 as they host Vassar College at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 6:00 pm. Both teams will close out their dual meet schedule on Saturday, February 5 at local and NJAC rival William Paterson.
