Swimming and Diving Rolls Past WPU in Dual Meet Finale


Wayne, NJ (2/5/11) – Senior Galina Loutchouk (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) won three individual events and added another in the 200 medley relay as the Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out their regular season with a sweep of local rival William Paterson in an NJAC meet at Wightman Pool on Saturday.

Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills)
won three individual events as the Red Hawk men downed the Pioneers 161.5-122.5 to complete their season at 6-5 overall, 2-2 in the NJAC. The women topped WPU 158-111 to finish at 5-5 and 2-2 in the conference.

Montclair won 24 of the events contested in the meet, including 1-2 finishes in eight events.

Loutchouk began the day helping the 200 medley relay to a win with a time of 1:55.93. She swam the third leg and was joined by freshman Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township), Laura Spadoni (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth) and sophomore Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge)

Loutchouk won the 1000 freestyle leading a 1-2 MSU finish with a time of 1!:47.18 with Allie Golden (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) coming in a 12:06.02. Loutchouk’s third win came in the 200 fly as she again led the 1-2 finish in the 200 fly timing in a 2:23.72 with Jackie Ubhaus  (Jefferson Township, NJ / Jefferson) taking second at 2:37.27. She wrapped up the day by taking top honors in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.86).

Donahue won the 100 backstroke (1:04.60) and the 500 freestyle in 5:39.84 and Spadoni picked up a second win in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.66). Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) posted two wins as well in the 200 freestyle (2:06.32) and 200 backstroke (2:22.91) and Vallone did the same taking first in the 50 freestyle (25.27) and 100 fly

Divers Laura Hess (Berlin, NJ / Eastern) and Lauren Corrente (Nyack, NY / Nyack) were first and second, respectively in the one-meter event. Hess posted a score of 185.10 and Corrente 178.80. Anthony Cacella (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) was second on the men’s side in the one-meter event (168.22) and was third in the three-meter (123.97).

Lee won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.09 and the added wins in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.83) and 200 individual medley (2:05.32).

Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown)
had two individual wins in the 50 free where he led a 1-2 Red Hawk finish with a time of 22.27 edging out Blaise Lacca (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) (22:97). The two then finished in the same order in the 100 freestyle at 49.44 and 50.81, respectively with Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) making it a Top 3 finish by MSU swimmers with a time of 51.04. Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) was first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.57.

Michael Smith
(Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East)
won the 200 freestyle (1:49.36) and the 500 freestyle (5:01.86) and finished second to Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) in the 1000 freestyle.  Berry swam 10:23.88 while Smith clocked in at 10:42.21.

Smith, Westerberg, Long and Lacca finished off MSU’s win with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.19) and the Red Hawks were also victorious in the 200 medley relay.

The Red Hawks are now off and begin preparation for Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships beginning on Friday, February 18 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
