Ellis Posts NCAA Provisional Mark in Pentathlon as Women's Indoor Track and Field Places 7th at CTC Championships


Middletown, CT (2/12/11) – Freshman Krystal Ellis (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) captured the pentathlon with an NCAA provisional mark and led a 1-2 finish by Montclair State in the event as the Red Hawks place seventh at the CTC Indoor Championships at Wesleyan University on Saturday.

Sophomore Ashadaya Patterson (Trenton, NJ / Northern Burlington) posted three Top 6 finishes as Montclair registered 47 points to finish seventh in the field of 21 teams.

Ellis won two of the five events contested in the pentathlon as she registered a score of 3,289 points, which is currently the third-highest total in Division III this season.  Sophomore Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) came within five points of the provisional mark for next month’s NCAA Indoor Championships at Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.  Gearity finished with 2,995 points, five less than the mark needed.

Ellis, who was just 111 points from automatic qualification, won both jumping events as she took the top spot in the high jump at 1.60 meters and long jump at 5.22 meters (17-feet, 1.5-inches), both personal bests. She would earn second in the 800 meters with another personal best (2:32.51) and was third in the shot put (9.37 meters) and fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.95 seconds).

Gearity made it a 1-2 finish by MSU in the 800 meters winning the event in a personal best time of 2:26.77. She was second in the high jump to Ellis at 1.51 meters and placed third in the 55 hurdles (8.83 seconds - personal best). Gearity placed fourth in the long jump at 4.61 meters and was seventh in the shot put (7.82 meters / 25-feet, 8-inches).

Patterson finished third in the 55 meter hurdles as she recorded a time of 8.66 seconds in the finals, a personal record after running 8.82 during the preliminaries. She would later place fifth in the 400 meters (1:02.06) and was sixth in the 200 meters at 27.18 seconds.

Ashley Powell (Orange, NJ / Marylawn of the Oranges)
finished fourth in the 200 meters posting a time of 27.00 seconds and also finished in the Top 8 in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.70 seconds. She advanced to the finals of the event with a personal best 7.60 time during the preliminaries.

Angelina Ollo (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany)
placed seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.25 while Brittany Stradford (Trenton, NJ / Trenton Central) was eighth in the 1000 meters at 3:26.63 (personal record). Hannah Campbell (Forked River, NJ / Lacey Township) placed ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.98 and Nicole Presti (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) went 11th in the 1000 meters (3:33.52) and 13th in the mile at 6:13.36.

In the field events, Antoinetta Altilio (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) was sixth in the triple jump (personal best 10.08 meters / 33-feet, 1-inch) and also ran in the 200 meters where whe posted a time of 28.58 (19th place). Michelle McNulty (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) registered a 10th-place finish in the long jump at 4.65 meters (15-feet, 3.25-inches).  Earlier in the day, McNulty was 13th in the 400 meters (1:04.00). Kaitlin Macknowski (New Brunswick, NJ / Spotswood) placed 14th in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:45.25.

The Red Hawks’ 4x800 meter relay team of McNulty, Stradford, Ollo and Campbell finished third overall with a time of 10:24:69.  

The Red Hawks are back in action on Sunday, February 20 as they compete in the 2011 NJAC Indoor Championships at The Armory in New York City.
