Men's Basketball NJAC Tourney Hopes Take Another Hit as MSU Falls at NJCU

Box Score

Jersey City, NJ (2/14/11) – The Montclair State men’s basketball NJAC Tournament hopes took another hit with the Red Hawks falling to red-hot New Jersey City University 82-62 at the John J. Moore Athletic Center on Monday evening. The game was a reschedule from a January 26 snowed out contest.

The loss, Montclair’s third straight, now puts the Red Hawks’ back against the wall. MSU (17-7 overall, 7-5 NJAC) must now defeat the same New Jersey City team on Wednesday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center to earn a berth in the NJAC Tournament which begins on Saturday, February 19.

A loss by Montclair would put it in a tie with Rutgers-Newark (7-6) for the third spot out of the North Division. The Scarlet Raiders would win the tiebreaker with MSU by virtue of its split with the Gothic Knights during the season while Montclair would be 0-2 versus NJCU.

Senior forward Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton Central) had a second straight double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds while junior forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) added 15 points and eight boards.

Prior to Wednesday’s game, Montclair will honor its six seniors – Prewitt, Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield), Sean Young (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood), Charles Miller (Linden, NJ / Linden), Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) and Hal Abraham (Suffern, NY / Suffern).
