Game One Box / Game Two Box

Little Falls, NJ (3/29/11) – Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) tossed a nine-inning, two-hit shutout in the opener while Heather Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) and Katie Muglia(South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) each drove in two runs in the nightcap as Montclair State swept a doubleheader from Hunter College, 1-0 and 6-2 in the Red Hawks’ home opener at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday.

The Red Hawks, playing their first games since returning from Florida on March 18, improved to 8-4 overall as they stretched their winning streak to four games.

Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) had two hits in the twinbill for the Hawks, who fell to 5-3-2) with the losses.

Hill upper her mark to 5-2 on the year with her third shutout of the season and second straight. Despite striking out 12 hitters, Hill needed to work extra innings to pick up the victory. That’s because freshman Angel Iacovetti (Imperial Beach, CA / Mar Vista) was able to match zeroes on the board as she struck out seven and walked two while limiting MSU to four hits.

Montclair State had the best chance to plate a run in the game in the second inning however Iacovetti got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam. In the eighth inning under the tiebreaker rule, neither team could capitalize and the Hawks failed again in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the inning, Muglia was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Alisha Cumberton (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East)Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) then smacked and RBI single scoring Muglia as Montclair took the first game, 1-0.

After needing nearly nine innings to get a run in the first contest, Montclair put two on the board in the bottom of the first as Bergman cracked a two-run single that scored both Muglia and Amato. MSU would add to the lead in the third asLiz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty) added an RBI single and Jamie Paulino (Linden, NJ / Linden) walked with the bases loaded for a 4-0 advantage.

Hunter finally cracked the scoring column in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Zieff and Iacovetti but Montclair countered in the bottom half as Muglia doubled home two runs.

Sophomore Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) earned the win. Miller (3-2) allowed three hits and two runs – both unearned – with four strikeouts in six innings. Hill pitched a scoreless seventh striking out the side to give her 15 on the day. Amanda Annicaro (Howard Beach, NY / Cardozo) took the loss to fall to 1-1.

Muglia and Kelli O’Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
