Baseball Tops NCAA Tournament-Bound Johns Hopkins, 7-3

Little Falls, NJ (5/10/11) – Senior second baseman Andrew Himmelfarb (Upper Nyack, NY / Nyack) belted a three-run homer while freshman righthander Alex Lesch (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) tossed five scoreless inning to close out the game as Montclair State upended NCAA Tournament-bound Johns Hopkins University 7-3 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore first baseman Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) and senior designated hitter Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) had two hits apiece as the Red Hawks (21-17) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Blue Jays. Montclair’s last victory came in 2004, a 4-3 win at Yogi Berra Stadium that handed Johns Hopkins its first loss of the year after 33 straight wins to open the season.

Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY / Christian Brothers Academy), Steve Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) and Jeff Lynch (Sewell, NJ / St. Joseph’s Prep) each had an RBI for the Blue Jays, who dropped their last contest before heading into the NCAA Regional Tournament next week. Hopkins earned its way in by winning the Centennial Conference title.

The Blue Jays took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Musary (Lake Orion, MI / Lake Orion) doubled down the right field line on the first pitch of the game and Bejsiuk followed with a base hit to left as Hopkins led 1-0 two batters into the contest. Lynch added a sacrifice fly for the other run.

The Red Hawks responded with a run in the bottom of the half. Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) opened with back-to-back singles. A fly out moved McGraw to third and he scored as Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) lofted a sacrifice fly to left field making the score 2-1.

MSU lower third of the order would spark a five-run second inning as the Red Hawks took the lead for good. Chesterman and Ercolano had consecutive singles with one out before Himmelfarb brought them all home with his second home run of the year over the left field fence giving Montclair a 4-2 lead. McGraw was hit by a pitch and Michael Boggi’s (Towaco, NJ / Montville) two-out double plated McGraw with Bond collecting the final run with an RBI triple to center field for his second run batted in as MSU led 6-2.

Johns Hopkins got a run back as Sikorski doubled with two outs in the third however Montclair countered in the bottom of the inning McGraw drove in a run with a ground out for a 7-3 Red Hawk lead.

The rest of the game was left to the pitcher on both sides. MSU starter Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) tossed a scoreless four inning before giving way to Lesch, who struck six and allowed just four hits over in earning his first collegiate victory. Papa gave up three runs (one earned) and four hits in his outing.

Righthander Matt Wiegand (San Diego, CA / La Jolla) took the loss to fall to 6-2 as he allowed six runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Sophomore third baseman Ryan Zakszewski (Gilbertsville, PA / Boyertown) was 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays.

Montclair travels to Salisbury University on Thursday, May 12 for a 3:30 pm matchup with the Sea Gulls.
