Innovative Clinical Teacher Experiences to Be Explored at Montclair State University

June 2, 2011—Montclair State University’s College of Education and Human Services was recently named one of three cross-site visit locations by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) to explore innovations in clinical experiences for teacher candidates.  In addition to Montclair State, host sites also include Indiana State University and Arizona State University.  The Montclair State visit will take place in September 2011.

“We are extremely pleased that Montclair State was selected to be a host site for this valuable program,” said Ada Beth Cutler, dean of the University’s College of Education and Human Services.  “The visits will include intensive observation of clinical practice programs at the University and with our partners in the Newark and Montclair school districts, which will demonstrate the University’s innovative models for teacher preparation programs.”

Deeper clinical practice designs, and related partnerships with P-12 school districts, are currently a primary avenue of innovation among university-based teacher preparation programs.  Through a partnership between thirty reform-oriented, university-based teacher preparation programs and AED, collectively known as the Teachers for a New Era Learning Network (LN), the relationship between the different models of clinical practice and school district partnership and the ability of graduates to have a positive impact on the learning of students will be explored.

With support from the Annenberg Foundation and Carnegie Corporation of New York, the LN will host three cross-site visits focused on clinical experience for teacher candidates in May and September of 2011. The visits, designed in collaboration with education deans from nine LN universities, are envisioned as an opportunity for a “thinking partnership” among the host and visitors, in which the process is interactive and open to problem-posing and exploration.

The outcomes of the visits will contribute to the design of a National Convening on Clinical Practice (November 14-15, 2011) as well as the shape of a White Paper on Clinical Experience that will be the final outcome of this initiative.
