Volleyball Rolls Past John Jay in Straight Sets

Montclair, NJ (10/1/11) – Sophomore middle blocker Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) posted six kills, two aces and two digs as Montclair State rolled past John Jay College in straight sets at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday morning. MSU won the match by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-7.

Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Willis (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) had five kills off the bench as the Red Hawks snapped a two match losing streak, improving to 8-12 on the year.

Sophomore Martina Hot (Glendale, NY / Academy of American Studies) had four kills and three digs for the Bloodhounds, who are now 0-15 following the loss.

Montclair jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and later led 19-6 as Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, NJ / Ramsey) served eight straight points, including a pair of aces. The lead grew to 23-9 and after a kill by Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota), a miscue by the Bloodhounds gave Montclair State the victory, 25-10.

In the second set, Montclair led 7-5 before Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) served five consecutive points, including a pair of aces as MSU went up 11-5. Four service points by Salemo increased the scored to 16-6 and a kill by Willis helped the Red Hawks to a 23-9 lead. An attack error brought MSU to set point and Megan Cockroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) put the set away with a kill as the Red Hawks lead 2-0 with the 25-13 win.

Montclair held another 6-1 lead early in the third and was in front 14-6 as Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ / Westwood) set up Willis for a kill. Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ / Sparta) added a pair of service aces and Campo two as well, the final coming on match point as Montclair closed out the win with a 25-7 triumph.

Gerner finished with four kills and three aces for Montclair State, which collected 17 in the match. Campo had 20 assists and four aces while Rhianna Ratta (Belleville, NJ / Belleville) had three kills. Libero Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) led the way with eight digs while Batiste and Salemo registered six apiece.

Montclair State is now off until Thursday, October 6 when they travel to the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ to face Rutgers-Newark in a 7:00 pm NJAC matchup.
