Women's Basketball Pulls Away From New Paltz for Second Straight Win, 70-51

Montclair, NJ (12/12/11) – Senior guard Jamie Ericson (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half while junior guard Michelle Montagna (New Providence, NJ / New Providence) added 10 of her 16 over the final 20 minutes as Montclair State evened its record with a 70-51 victory over New Paltz at the Panzer Athletic Center on Monday evening.

Freshman forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ /Roselle Catholic) had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Red Hawks connected six times from behind the arc in the second half to even their record at 4-4.

Junior forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) had 12 points for New Paltz, which dropped its second straight and fell to 3-7.

Montclair State led a majority of the first half as the Red Hawks led 30-25 behind 10 points from Tobie and eight by Ericson.

In the second half, the Hawks’ Shanay Bradley (Bronx, NY / New Explorers) scored on a layup to bring New Paltz within 34-31 with 17:31 to go. Montcair responded with 10 of the next 12 points, including a three-pointer by Montagna to make the score 39-31. Montagna would later add a layup off the break and a three-pointer by Ericson gave MSU a 44-33 advantage with 13:41 to play.

Colleen Kelly (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills) scored on a layup with 9:31 left to boost Montclair State’s lead to 52-36. She would later hit a 17-footer from the left side with 3:45 to play as the Red Hawks took their largest lead of the game at 65-44.

Montagna added three rebounds and two assists in her reserve role while Theresa Towns (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) netted eight points and six rebounds. The Red Hawks shot 47 percent (16-of-34) in the second half, including 6-of-11 (55 percent) from behind the arc. Tobie collcted four assists, two blocks and four steals.

Bradley had eight points and led all players with 10 rebounds for New Paltz, which shot just 31 percent (17-of-55) from the field, including 2-of-10 from three-point range. The Hawks also shot 15-of-27 at the free-throw line compared to 10-of-11 by Montclair State.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 17 when they meet Gwynedd-Mercy at 2:00 pm. New Paltz is off until the 2012 calendar year when it hosts Eastern Connecticut at the Hawk Center on January 4.
