Men's Swimming and Diving Victorious in Return to Action


Newark, NJ (1/16/12) – The Montclair State men’s swimming and diving team finished with the top time in all 11 events and had finished 1-2 in five of them as the Red Hawks knocked off New Jersey Institute of Technology, 108-76 on Monday evening.

Junior Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) won two individual events as did Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) as MSU, in its first competition since December 9, improved to 3-6 on the season.

Westerberg, Lee and Long combined with Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) to win the 200 medley relay as the quartet registered a time of 1:43.07. Berry led a 1-2 Red Hawks finish in both the 1000 freestyle and 100 backstroke with Corey Munro (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) placing second. Berry swam 10:40.54 in the 100 free with Munro clocking in at 11:45.33. He then won the 100 back with a time of 1:00.01 followed by Munro at 1:03.68.

Westerberg also led a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle as he edged out Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison) with a time of 1:52.30 with Volski coming in at 1:54.36. Westerberg won the 100 butterfly in 56.41 while French placed second at 58.16 seconds.

Long won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 22.70 and 50.88, respectively.  Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph's) was second in the 50 freestyle a he recorded a time of 23.61 seconds.

Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) was victorious in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 2:13.37.

The Montclair State men are back in action on Wednesday, January 18 as they host Vassar College at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool.
