Gearity Finishes Second, Thomas Sixth in Pentathlon at Lehigh Invite


Bethlehem, PA (1/20/12) – Junior Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) set a personal best score in the pentathlon finishing second while freshman Beaira Thomas (Irvington, NJ / Science Park) was sixth as the duo competed in the Mountain Hawk Invite at Lehigh University’s Rauch Fieldhouse on Friday.

Gearity bested her previous high mark of 3,095 points as she totaled 3,133 points in the five-event competition. Thomas, competing in her first pentathlon collected 1,956 points. She is currently ranked second in the nation in the pentathlon.

Gearity, who boasted personal best marks in four of the five events, finished third in each of the first three events. In the 60 hurdles, she ran 9.74 seconds to eclipse her previous mark of 9.77 set last weekend at the Gotham Cup. After leaping 1.49 meters in the high jump, she threw 8.38 meters in the shot put for another personal best.

After earning 1,795 points in the first three events, she placed fourth in the long jump with a personal best 5.02 meters. Gearity wrapped up the pentathlon by winning the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:23.78.

Gearity is currently ranked in the Top 35 in four different events this season - pentathlon (No. 2), 400 meters (No. 15), 800 meters (No. 35) while also being part of the 4x400 relay that is ranked 11th overall.

Thomas ran 11.55 seconds in the 60 meters and recorded marks of 1.46 meters and 7.46 meters in the high jump and shot put, respectively. After failing to score in the long jump, Thomas bounced back with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters clocking in at 2:40.75.
