Swimming and Diving Splits Meet with Ramapo


Mahwah, NJ (1/28/12) – Junior Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) and sophomore Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) each won three individual events as the Montclair State women’s swimming and diving team beat Ramapo College, 156-106 on Saturday.

Senior Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ /Vernon Township) added two individual victories as the Red Hawks (4-6) also picked up their first NJAC victory over the season (1-2).

Meanwhile the men (4-8, 0-3 NJAC) dropped a 154-107 decision to the Roadrunners.

Donahue, Abner and Vallone also combined with Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) as the quartet got MSU off on the right foot with a win in the 200 medley relay posting a time of 1:57.63.

Vallone would later grab victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.23) and both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 25.38 and 55.64, respectively. Donahue claimed a win in the 100 backstroke registering a time of 1:03.64 before sweeping the stroke with a win in the 200 event (2:16.29). Donahue completed her day with a win in the 500 freestyle coming in at 5:37.69.

Abner was a winner in the 100 butterfly (1:04.95) and 200 individual medley (2:20.02) while Jacky Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) took top honors in the 1000 freestyle (11:54.02) in addition to finishing second to Donahue in the 500 free (5:51.85).

Maria Vira
(Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) made it a 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke for Montclair State as Vira out-touched Kathleen French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) by six-tenths of a second (2:39.34 to 2:39.94).

Moe and Vira then teamed with Lauren Uckar (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) and Allie Golden (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) to win the 200 freestyle relay as the group posted a time of 1:51.87.

Catherine O’Kane (Middletown, NJ / Middletown South) was second in the 1000 freestyle (12:00.10) and Joseph the same position in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.49).

For the men’s team, Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) won the 200 freestyle (1:50.88) while Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph’s) captured the 100 breaststroke (1:02.03). Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) was a winner in the 500 freestyle and the Red Hawks’ 200 freestyle relay team of Keenan, Michael Adams (Wharton, NJ / Pope John XXIII), Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison)  and Berry won that event with a time of 1:32.44.

Montclair State returns to action next Saturday, February 4 as they host local rival William Paterson University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 1:00 pm. It will be the Red Hawks’ final dual meet before the Metropolitan Conference Championships on February 17-19.
