Baseball Drops First Game; MSU Falls to Methodist at Piedmont Spring Break Tourney, 11-7

Demorest, GA – The Montclair State baseball team dropped its first game of the 2012 season on Sunday as the Red Hawks fell to Methodist University, 11-7 at the Piedmont Spring Break Tournament on Sunday.

Junior leftfielder Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ, Park Ridge) drove in two runs for MSU (1-1), which battled back from a four-run deficit with a four-run seventh inning to tie the game at 7-7.

Methodist pushed two runs across in the top of the second inning however Montclair State would answer back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 advantage. Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) singled with two outs and Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ, Cedar Grove) followed with a base hit. Stephen Nappe (Edison, NJ, Edison) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Moreno’s single delivered two runs knotting the game at 2-2. Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ, Bloomfield) followed with a base hit for the go-ahead run.

The Monarchs answered with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning for a 7-3. MSU then mounted its comeback .Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ , Morristown) and Pace drew back-to-back walks with one out and after a walk to Kevin Bond, all three runners moved up on a wild pitch with McGraw crossing the plate to make the score 7-4. Nappe followed with a RBI base hit and Andrew Rigassio (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia)’ pinch-hit single brought MSU within 7-6 and the game was tied when Nappe came home on a wild pitch.

But Methodist answered right back with two runs in the top of the eighth and then tacked on two more in the ninth for the final margin.

Bond, Nappe and Chesterman each had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.

Junior Craig Anderson (Little Falls, NJ, Passaic Valley) took the loss for MSU allowing the two eighth-inning runs. Sophomore lefty Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) went the first 4 2/3 innings allowing five runs (three earned) and six hits, striking out four and walking three.

The Red Hawks face host Piedmont College in their final game of the tournament before returning home. Montclair then heads to Port Charlotte, FL for the Snowbird Classic beginning March 10.
