{"id":210412,"date":"2019-10-28T09:51:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T13:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=210412"},"modified":"2019-10-28T10:01:39","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:01:39","slug":"women-entrepreneurs-take-center-stage-at-montclair-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2019\/10\/28\/women-entrepreneurs-take-center-stage-at-montclair-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Entrepreneurs Take Center Stage at Montclair State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women sharing their stories, breaking barriers and owning their accomplishments: These were three major themes at Montclair State\u2019s 6th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2019\/10\/09\/women-entrepreneurship-week-conference-to-offer-free-childcare\/\">Women Entrepreneurship Week Conference<\/a> on October 23, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/our-team-and-philosophy\/carley-graham-garcia\/\">Carley Graham Garcia<\/a>, who recently took the helm as executive director at the Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation after 12 years at Google, told attendees the conference was about fostering networks between ambitious women entrepreneurs. \u201cWe are committed to supporting women full-circle in their lives,\u201d said Garcia, noting that this year, childcare was provided free-of-charge through the sponsorship of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lightbridgeacademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lightbridge Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1376_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1376_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Across speakers and panel discussions, TED-style talks and a closing workshop, women entrepreneurs of all ages and industries discussed and shared their stories \u2014 the challenges, failures, winning strategies and victories \u2014 to a rapt audience that grew throughout the day as overflow seating was added at the back of the room atop University Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Women Entrepreneurship Week was born at Montclair State University\u2019s Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation (FCE&amp;I) in 2014 to support their mission of nurturing female founders. Initially, events were held at four universities, growing and expanding across the globe each consecutive year. The 2019 Women Entrepreneurship Week was celebrated at more than 241 institutions in 32 countries, as well as 49 states and the District of Columbia in the United States.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1584_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1584_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Montclair State\u2019s Women Entrepreneurship Week activities launched on Monday, October 21 with \u201cFinding Success as Food Entrepreneurs\u201d event, feature female founders sharing their startup stories and tips for making it in the food industry. Panelists included: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/risa-magid-boyer\/\">Risa Magid Boyer<\/a>, chef\/owner at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanillamore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vanillamore<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/caroline-mak\/\">Caroline Mak<\/a>, director of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hotbreadkitchen.org\/incubates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hot Bread Kitchen Incubates<\/a> and co-founder of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynsodaworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Soda Works<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/christine-miller-allen\/\">Christine Miller-Allen<\/a>, founder\/head baker at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mopweezebakery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mo\u2019Pweeze Bakery<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/kris-ohleth\/\">Kris Ohleth<\/a>, founder\/owner at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenstatekitchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garden State Kitchen<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/sandra-mcneil-rodgers\/\">S.M. Rogers<\/a>, founder and head chef at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandissoulbites.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sandi\u2019s SoulBites<\/a>. The moderator was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/rebecca-king\/\">Rebecca King<\/a>, food and dining writer at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NorthJersey.com<\/a> and <em>The Record<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Paying it Forward<\/h2>\n<p>The conference was remarkable for the wide range of women who shared the stage. Pioneers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/mimi-feliciano\/\">Mimi Feliciano<\/a>, Founder and CEO of FEM Real Estate; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/melissa-walker\/\">Melissa Walker<\/a>, president and founder, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jazzhousekids.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jazz House Kids<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/betty-manetta\/\">Beatriz Manetta<\/a>, president and CEO of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/argentassociates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Argent Associates<\/a>, offered the wisdom of their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Walker advised new entrepreneurs to \u201cdedicate yourself to excellent work. There&#8217;s a lot of mediocrity out there. Focus on excellence. Find where your niche is and really dig deep. If someone offers money but it&#8217;s off your mission&#8230;. you don&#8217;t get off your game.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1561_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1561_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Manetta said she was working for a better future by influencing industry groups to support women entrepreneurs: &#8220;I want my ceiling to be the floor for the women around this room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of young women in the room were listening, appreciating the advice and sharing their stories. Some Millennials on the stage included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/jessica-gonzalez\/\">Jessica Gonzalez<\/a> who worked three jobs to start <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/incharged.com\/charging-stations\/\" target=\"_blank\">InCharged<\/a> in order to maintain full ownership of the company; Kailu Guan of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/helloava.co\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxIP7rZbb5AIVAdTeCh2e5gLzEAAYASAAEgJa9fD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\">HelloAva<\/a> dropped out of Parsons School of Design to become a tech entrepreneur when she saw a market for recommending skin care products for individual needs; and 29-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/abby-taylor\/\">Abby Taylor<\/a> took her passion from a <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playabowls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Playa Bowls<\/a> sidewalk stand to a fast-growing regional acai bowls franchise in just five years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1043_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1043_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Budding entrepreneurs soaking up the message included several groups of high school students. Shefali Murthi of the all-girls Kent Place School said she was interested in engineering but hadn\u2019t previously considered being an entrepreneur: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t something I thought about, but coming here, it seems much more doable with all this support.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Loving What You Do and Believing in It<\/h2>\n<p>All the women entrepreneurs shared a passion for what they were building and an unshakeable belief in their product.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/karen-j-kessler\/\">Karen Kessler<\/a> \u2014 known as a \u201cfixer\u201d \u2014 founded the public relations firm <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/evergreenpr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Evergreen Partners<\/a> 26 years ago. Since then she\u2019s been involved in high-profile crisis management and litigation support for cases like those seen in the movies <em>Hustlers<\/em> and <em>Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes<\/em>. Kessler said, \u201cWhen words like <em>subpoena<\/em> come across my desk, <em>indictment,<\/em> I&#8217;m gleeful. I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1886_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1886_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Taylor likewise followed her passion. \u201cMy partner Rob said, \u2018You really like bowls. Ask the pizza guy you live above if we can make acai bowls and sell them outside his shop.\u2019\u201d When nobody came to the stand initially, Taylor kept going: \u201cI never in my head thought I&#8217;m going to fail at this. In my head, I knew we were not going to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1823_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1823_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/joelle-keane-tramel\/\">Joelle Tramel<\/a>, Head of Cross Video Sales Solutions, YouTube and Video Solutions at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/about.google\/intl\/en_us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, advised attendees to \u201clove what you do but don&#8217;t let it be your only thing. Find something else to de-stress you,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/jeanne-pinder\/\">Jeanne Pinder<\/a>, CEO and founder of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/clearhealthcosts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ClearHealthCosts<\/a> countered \u2014 to laughter \u2014 that working on her business is what de-stresses her. \u201cWhat do I do for fun? I really enjoy dismantling the health care industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Finding Investors, Seeding the Future<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/kathleen-coviello-2\/\">Kathleen Coviello<\/a>, VP of Technology and Life Sciences Investments at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njeda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Jersey Economic Development Authority<\/a>, updated attendees on the numerous funds and incentives that the State of New Jersey is providing for women-owned and minority-owned businesses, including a new partnership with <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/goldenseeds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Seeds<\/a>, a national early-stage investment firm focusing on women-led business. Visit the NJEDA website <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njeda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1487_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1487_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>\u201cIamRemarkable\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/jen-shap\/\">Jen Shap<\/a>, Google Agency Business Lead, led an #IamRemarkable workshop aimed at \u201cempowering women and underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond.\u201d Shap explained that the benefits of self-promotion are vast \u2014 including taking control of how you\u2019re perceived by others, and making them understand the unique contribution you can make.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1103_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/10\/102319_1103_SBUS-Womens-Entrepreneurship-Week.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Women at Women&apos;s Entrepreneurship Week\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>At the end of the workshop, Shap invited three participants to share lists of what made them remarkable from the stage. Before sharing hers, Ashley Ann Lora expressed her gratitude for WEW: \u201cI\u2019m in awe of women getting together and supporting one another. It\u2019s beautiful to come into a space where I know it\u2019s safe and I can be myself and I can ask for help.
