{"id":213286,"date":"2020-12-01T11:54:35","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T16:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=213286"},"modified":"2020-12-01T13:19:53","modified_gmt":"2020-12-01T18:19:53","slug":"message-in-a-bottle-part-3-more-surprises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2020\/12\/01\/message-in-a-bottle-part-3-more-surprises\/","title":{"rendered":"Message in a Bottle, Part 3: More Surprises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sixth grade school assignment has reopened the story of families descending from two bricklayers who left a message in a bottle inside College Hall more than a century ago.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest twist, Robert Gleeson, a 12-year-old in the Bronx, New York, was writing a paper on a favorite New York City landmark when his mother, Susan Tursi-Gleeson, connected an often-told family story with the Montclair State bottle mystery.<\/p>\n<p>A brick in the Empire State Building has the name of Robert\u2019s great-great-grandfather, William Hanley, on it in recognition of his role in building what was the tallest building in the world when it opened in 1931, the family says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s been drilled in our heads since I was a child,\u201d says Tursi-Gleeson. \u201cWhenever we were in the city, my mother would say, \u2018Oh, there it is, the building my grandfather built.\u2019 It&#8217;s always been famous in our family knowing that he had a hand in building that building.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p>But other than that fun fact, the family knows very little about William P. Hanley, who also had a hand in building the foundation for what was then known as the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair. He had placed his daughters, (the youngest, Marion, was Susan\u2019s grandmother) in an orphanage soon after his young wife died in 1907. Over the years, William seemingly moved where construction jobs took him and had little contact with his children as they grew up.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until Tursi-Gleeson was helping Robert with his report and searched William Hanley&#8217;s name to see if there was a photo that the pieces came together.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/11\/Message.in_.Bottle.3.Gleeson.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/11\/Message.in_.Bottle.3.Gleeson.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Robert Gleeson with his ancestry homework on a computer\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A school assignment led 12-year-old Robert Gleeson to discover a connection to Montclair State by way of his great-great-grandfather, William Hanley,\u00a0a bricklayer who hid a message in a bottle in College Hall in 1907.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><br \/>\nAnd there was the article in <em>Montclair<\/em>, about a message in the bottle left by William Hanley and James Lennon, craftsmen from Newark, New Jersey. Dated July 3, 1907, they hid a note inside a massive supporting wall for what\u2019s now known as College Hall, the origins of Montclair State University.<\/p>\n<p><em>Montclair<\/em>\u2019s story, \u201cThe Descendants,\u201d followed their family trees with the help of historians who gathered primary sources, including birth and death certificates and a conversation with James Lennon\u2019s granddaughter. \u201cIt gives me a sense of conclusion,\u201d Nancy Foster, James Lennon\u2019s granddaughter, recently wrote in an email. \u201cI have a story about my grandfather to pass down to future generations. How grand is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until Robert started writing his report, the search for living descendants of William Hanley seemed to hit a dead end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said to myself,\u201d Tursi-Gleeson recalls, \u201c\u2018Wow, somebody up there really wanted me to see this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharing the discovery, her aunt, Joan Keating (William Hanley\u2019s granddaughter) says, \u201cIt\u2019s so interesting.
